Walter Salles’ On the Road, Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy and Michael Haneke’s Amour will join Rust and Bone by Jacques Audiard and David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis for a trip to the 65th annual Cannes Film Festival.

Also screening in the competition are Holy Motors by Leos Carax, The Angels’ Share by Ken Loach, John Hillcoat’s Lawless, which stars Shia LaBoeuf, Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman alongside Jessica Chastain in a Prohibition-era drama, and more U.S. titles such as Jeff Nichols’ Mud and Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly with Brad Pitt and Ray Liotta. All in all, U.S. filmmakers will have a strong presence on the Croisette this year.

President Gilles Jacob and artistic director Thierry Fremaux announced the official selection for the May 16-27 festival at a press conference in Paris late Thursday morning.

While the 2011 competition lineup was light on U.S. directors and star power, the Cannes team certainly made up for it this year. “American cinema has come back relatively en force,” Fremaux said.

Pitt, Robert Pattinson, Nicole Kidman and Marion Cotillard and Matthew McConaughey — who both have multiple projects in Cannes — will add glam to the fest as they make their way down the world’s most famous cinema catwalk.

Filming for ‘Low Life‘ (Untitled James Gray Project) wrapped earlier this month and a wrap party was held at The Electric Room on March 18. NY Post Page Six reports:

Marion Cotillard handed out gifts to fellow cast and crew at a wrap party Sunday night for the untitled, 1920s James Gray-directed project she filmed with Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner. Cotillard, who came with partner Guillaume Canet, fashioned giant clothespins for each cast and crew member with his or her name and unique decorations, and passed them out all night during the party at Nur Khan’s Electric Room in the Dream Downtown.

The movie is currently in post-production for 15 weeks and director James Gray hopes to have it ready for the Toronto International Film Festival when he spoke to The Playlist:

I think it’s going to be my best work. What I shot was not just my best work, but the actors doing their best and I’m very excited about it for that reason. I’m extremely excited, like I said it’s the best thing I’ve done.

The French theatrical release date for ‘Un goût de rouille et d’os ‘ (Rust & Bone) has been pushed forward from October to May 17, 2012 – the day after the Cannes Film Festival opens. This is most likely confirmation of the rumours that the movie will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

Earlier this month new casting for Guillaume Canet’s upcoming movie ‘Blood Ties‘ was announced via The Hollywood Reporter. Mark Wahlberg is no longer attached to the project but Clive Owen came on board the adaptation of the French novel Les liens du sang. Additionally to Zoe Saldana and Marion Cotillard her ‘Big Fish‘ co-star Billy Crudup and fellow Dior muse Mila Kunis were cast. And Marion’s ‘Rust & Bone‘ co-star Matthias Schoenaerts has an offer for a role while ‘Low Life‘ director James Gray helped Guillaume Canet write the screenplay.

The story centers on a younger brother (Crudup) who has to ask his convict older brother (Owen) to go back into the underworld to help out the family. Kunis and Cotillard play love interests. If the finanacing comes together, the movie will head for an April start in New York.

Rust and Bone‘ aka ‘Un gout de rouille et d’os‘ will be released in France on 24 October 2012. There are strong rumours the film will premiere at Cannes Film Festival, which is no surprise given the reception of Un Prophete, Audiard’s last film.

The Playlist also confirms the already posted news that Alexandre Desplat will be doing the score for the film.

Filming for ‘Rust & Bone’ Continues

As on Tuesday, Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenarts continued to film for ‘Un goût de rouille et d’os‘ (Rust & Bone) on a private beach called Goéland in Cannes yesterday (source). Their characters Stéphanie and Ali were taking a dip in the ocean. Marion was seen sitting in a wheelchair and it was made to look as if she was wearing prosthetics from the knees downwards. Although the production was trying hard to cut off the view to the set to ensure privacy many of the pictures taken seem very intrusive (those are not included in this update) so I hope production moves to a more secluded area soon.

I added a few additional pictures from October 5 when Marion Cotillard was rehearsing with the orca whales in Marineland at Antibes, France. Then you can also enjoy new pictures from last Saturday at the same place. It is currently unclear whether those were more rehearsals or actual filming took place. And then you can also see pictures taken in Cannes yesterday, where Marion Cotillard was seen filming scenes while being in character and walking on a crutch.

You can see pictures of Marion and co-star Matthias Schoenarts from today’s filming on the beach in Cannes on EyePrime.

While filming for ‘Un gouût de rouille et d’os‘ (Rust and Bone) caused a closure of the sea front road between Fort Carré and la Siesta from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today (source), Marion Cotillard continued her training with the orcas at Antibes’ Marineland. I added a bunch of pics taken today to the gallery.

‘Rust and Bone’ Started Filming Yesterday

NiceMatin.com reports that filming for Jacques Audiard’s new movie ‘Un goût de rouille et d’os‘ (Rust and Bone) starring Marion Cotillard started yesterday in Antibes. Marion herself wasn’t on the set but she arrived on the Côte d’Azur on Monday and spent Tuesday afternoon at the Antibes Marineland in rehearsals to be able to portray an orca trainer. She will return in November to film her scenes.

AlloCiné also has an official synopsis and it shows how some of the short stories of Craig Davidson‘s book have been converted into one storyline for the movie:

Ali is actually called Alain. Alain van Versch. He is 25 years old and lives in the North. He has no money and has never had any. When you’re young and alone, money is not a problem. It becomes one when the girl with whom you have had a child places it in your hands. Now, obviously, Ali has a problem: his name is Sam, and he’s five years old.

Running on and running out of ideas Ali calls his sister who lives in Antibes in the south. This is where the father and the child who don’t know each other will find shelter for the winter, in the basement of a house.

Ali agrees with the song: misery is less painful in the sun. He does odd jobs: night watchman, bouncer … And it is in a nightclub, le Fever, that he meets Stéphanie. She is 28 years old, she is blonde, she’s beautiful. It is a princess with an incredible occupation: orca trainer at the Aquatic Park in Antibes.

Ali accompanies her home and leaves her his number, but nothing is possible between them. A princess does not go out with a guy like Ali.

It takes the orca presentation show to turn into drama and Stéphanie to lose both her legs before a phone call in the middle of the night connects them again.

When Ali finds Stéphanie, packed in a wheelchair, alone in her new special needs apartment, he understands what a princess is who has lost her legs. A Princess fallen from above.

Between them will grow a relationship that is special, carnal and codified. And when Ali participates in illegal fights to save her life, she will become his manager.

Matthias Schoenarts about working with Marion

Un goût de rouille et d’os‘ (Rust and Bones) co-star Matthias Schoenarts recently won the Best Actor prize at the Flanders Film Awards in Belgium for his role in ‘Rundskop‘. Cinevox.be interviewed him about his upcoming projects. He revealed that he got the male lead role in Jacques Audiard’s ‘Un goût de rouille et d’os‘ after several auditions and that he’s done 6 weeks of rehearsals with Marion Cotillard in Paris (I’m not sure when those rehearsals took place). Filming will start this month and last 70 days. In the video interview he praises both Jacques Audiard and Marion Cotillard, says that they are geniuses and interesting people. Sadly, I don’t speak Dutch to understand more than that.

[edit Oct 11] Thanks to Helena for a better summary: “He’s saying that there are some people in the world he would make a movie with without reading the script, but he still did read it. And the project looks fantastic. He’s comparing the movie to Bull’s Head. He says he has a lot of respect for Jacques Audiard. He says that he is one of the best directors in the world. He compliments Marion and he says she works with heart and soul.”
