Yesterday, Le Figaro mentioned in their Cannes article that Marion Cotillard will be filming the new movie by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi in Paris in the fall. What do we know about it?

Back in January The Daily Beast reported:

Farhadi is currently working on a screenplay with acclaimed writer Yazmina Reza, who penned the play God of Carnage, that he hopes to shoot in France soon; he has approached Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) and Marion Cotillard for leads.

Various casting sites posted an ad on Saturday looking for 2 girls (10 and 14 years old) to play the daughters of Marion’s character.

Payvand Iran News reported:

The acclaimed Iranian director Asghar Farhadi will shoot a French-language film in Paris next fall. The news was announced by Memento Films’ Alexandre Mallet-Guy, who told the press that further details about the film will be released at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Mallet-Guy did say, however, that the film is not the previously announced love story between an Iranian girl and a North African boy set in Paris.

And finally, director Asghar Farhadi will be awarded first EU MEDIA prize on Sunday, May 20, during the Cannes Film Festival for this mystery project. Hopefully, this is when we’ll get more information.

“I am proud to give this award to Mr Farhadi today for this film project which has a strong cultural identity and illustrates the openness of European culture, which I defend daily. After the worldwide success of his masterpiece “A Separation”, he gives us a project which is committed and moving in equal measure and above all draws on universality” said Ms Vassiliou.

Asghar Farhadi said, “In these times when certain politicians are trying to turn the beautiful rainbow of cultural diversity in the world into differences and confrontations, I believe that this MEDIA award for my next film project is a very encouraging sign. I would therefore like to warmly thank the MEDIA programme, and commend it for its lucid and open vision of mutual and respectful exchanges between cultures.”

Exciting news! Deadline.com just reported that Marion Cotillard together with Joaquin Phoenix and possibly Jeremy Renner will star in writer/director James Gray’s next movie called ‘Low Life‘. With all the actors currently being busy shooting is scheduled to begin next year. What is it about?

Marion Cotillard will play a woman attempting to immigrate from Poland. Her American dream turns into a nightmare. While sailing to Ellis Island and a new start, her sister grows deathly ill and she is forced to trade sexual favors for medicine and food to keep her sister alive. Once they land, she is warned to keep quiet about what happened. Though she does, she walks away with immigration papers that deem her a woman with bad morals. With no place to go, she falls prey to a charming sleazebag (Phoenix), who persuades her to turn tricks in New York. Renner is close to signing on to play the sleazebag’s cousin, a magician who sweeps the young woman off her feet and is her best chance to escape the nightmarish life she has fallen into.

ComingSoon.net just reported Warner Bros. Pictures’ announcement from earlier today that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have – after much speculation – officially joined the cast of ‘The Dark Knight Rises, the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend helmed by Christopher Nolan. This will be quite the ‘Inception‘ re-union since both Marion and Joseph as well as already confirmed cast members Michael Caine and Tom Hardy were directed by Christopher Nolan in that movie.

Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.

Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.

The Hollywood Reporter has this quote from Christopher Nolan:

When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.

In the beginning of 2011 the new comedy series ‘Platane‘ written by Éric Judor will start airing on Canal+. There will be 12 30-minute episodes. Many stars will be making a guest appearance, including Marion Cotillard, Monica Bellucci, Guillaume Canet, Gilles Lellouche, Matthieu Almaric, Vicent Cassel, Clotilde Coureau and Pierre Richard. Main actors will be Éric Judor, Jean-Baptiste Shelmerdine, Arnaud Henriet, Romain Berger, Hafid Ferdjioui and Ramzy. What is it all about?

One sad evening, Eric crashes into a tree – at 70 km/h. After a year in a coma while his comrade Ramzy’s landed a hit with “HP” (sequel to the “H” series), Eric has a revelation: he will get into Arthouse Cinema to prove that he can make a serious, profound and moving film. Despite general skepticism, he decides to write a sequel to “La Môme” (La Vie en Rose) and call it: “La Môme 2.0 Next Generation.” Surrounded by a production team with unproven skills, his clingy friend squatting at his place and rejected by the woman he attempts to win back… Will Eric find the strength to successfully complete this ambitious project which could forever change the image of French cinema?

Already the description sounds hilarious, can’t wait to hear more!

Director confirms “Vivre c’est mieux que mourir”

Fabulous news! At the UK premiere of his movie ‘L’Arnacoeur‘ (Heartbreaker) director Pascal Chaumeil confirmed the casting of Romain Duris and Marion Cotillard in his upcoming comedy ‘Vivre c’est mieux que mourir‘.

What are you working on next? Do you have another project after this?
Yes. We have… probably… again, it’s a comedy, a bit different from Heartbreaker. And it’s, it would be with Romain, normally, he read the script, he likes it and normally it’s with Romain Duris and Marion Cotillard. It’s like an action, adventure comedy. A bit more crazy than L’Arnacoeur.

That sounds wonderful! What is the story about? You said it’s got lots of action and comedy.. is it…
Yeah, it’s difficult to tell the story. But in fact, there are two films in the same film. One is the story happening really in the real life where a guy is working in a hotel, he’s a very small guy in a hotel. And he gets into something, he steals some money from a client because he needs to do something. And then he finds the only place where he’s safe in this hotel is in a room where is a very big producer. And the guy, the producer thinks he’s a screenwriter that he’s waiting for. So he will have to invent a new film, and he’s never been a writer. So we are going from the real situation to the film he’s telling, the story. So, that’s something special, but I think it will be very funny.

Marion attached to ‘Cosmopolis’

Posted in: Movies, News & Rumours,

This past Tuesday Variety reported that both Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard are attached to star in David Cronenberg’s self-penned adaptation of Don DeLillo’s novel ‘Cosmopolis‘. The company who’s handling international sales rights is presenting the project to buyers during the Cannes Film Festival. David Cronenberg himself first mentioned the project last summer. Here’s the IMDb listing.

The $20.5 million film is penned by Cronenberg and produced by Portuguese producer Paulo Branco’s Alfama Films and Cronenberg’s Toronto-based Antenna, in association with Kinology.

The thriller follows a multimillionaire on a 24-hour odyssey across Manhattan. Farrell will play the asset manager who loses all his wealth over the course of one day. Cotillard will play his wife.

Lensing will take place from March to May [2011] in Toronto and New York.

And here some further information about the movie from Alfama Films:

Undoubtedly one of the main figures of American literature, Don DeLillo signs with Cosmopolis a visual and frenetic piece of work, in a single unit of space and time – 24 hours in New York.

Eric, a 28 year old Golden Boy, turned his life into a violent and obsessive microcosm of today’s world, above which a looming shadow leads to the worship of “matter” above all things.

For David Cronenberg, visionary filmmaker of the collapse of the world, the adaptation of this novel, halfway between reality and the virtual dimension, where the hero hides in a maze of, somehow, senseless images, appears as a promise of enlightenment for each viewer.

On a sidenote, Marion Cotillard was already once attached to a project starring Colin Farrell while finances were being secured at the Cannes Film Market. In the end ‘Ondine‘ happened without her. Also Colin may not pronounce Marion’s surname correctly (as heard at an awards event earlier this year) but he attended the Pre-Golden Globe dinner in her honour back in January 2008.

Marion to star in Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight in Paris’

Posted in: Movies, News & Rumours,

I think pretty much everyone knows by now that Marion Cotillard is starring in Woody Allen’s new movie set in Paris and up until now only known as Woody Allen Summer Project 2011. We know a bit more about it now but first let’s start at the beginning.

It was reported on March 2 by Deadline.com that Woody Allen cast Marion Cotillard as the “Muse” in his new Paris-based movie. On April 4 it was confirmed by Le Parisien that Marion Cotillard had really been cast for the movie and that filming in Paris was scheduled to begin July 5.

Shortly afterwards, rumours emerged that Marion was replacing France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy despite the NY Daily News reporting on April 4 that Ms Bruni was overheard as saying “It’s a real part, not just a cameo. But if I’m no good, I expect him to cut me out!” Official confirmation from Woody Allen’s rep that both Marion and Carla will be in the movie came via CNN on April 6.

Now onto the latest news. Variety reported that in a rare move Woody Allen announced a title as well as plot details for the movie yesterday. (usually he waits to see the finished product before giving it a name – if it’s good, he’ll give it an attention-getting title; if it’s bad, a less flashy one according to New York Magazine). Anyway, the movie is now titled “Midnight in Paris” and stars Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates and Carla Bruni. Also in the cast are Michael Sheen, Nina Arianda, Tom Hiddleston, Corey Stoll, Mimi Kennedy and Kurt Fuller.

Plot synopsis:

“Midnight in Paris” is a romantic comedy that follows a family travelling to the city for business, including a young engaged couple that has their lives transformed throughout the journey. The film celebrates a young man’s great love for Paris, and simultaneously explores the illusion people have that a life different from their own is better.

Great news: Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Marion Cotillard have all signed on to join the starry cast ensemble of Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming sci-fi thriller ‘Contagion‘. The movie is based on a script by “The Bourne Ultimatum” and “The Informant!” writer Scott Z. Burns, and revolves around the threat posed by a deadly disease, with multiple plotlines in the style of Soderbergh’s ‘Traffic‘. Reportedly the story takes place over four continents and is “terrifying.” The plan is to shoot the project later this year, possibly fall.
