Marion Cotillard Stars in David Bowie’s music video ‘The Next Day’

Marion Cotillard and her ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ co-star Gary Oldman star in David Bowie’s new music video ‘The Next Day, the title track of his latest album. The clip was written and conceived by David Bowie himself and directed by Floria Sigismondi.

The video shows Gary Oldman in priest’s garb punching a beggar on his way into a brothel-looking club. Inside, in one corner, a man whips his bloody back. In another scene, a cardinal passes out cash to scantily clad dancers. A woman with a veil drawn over her face has a platter with two eyeballs staring up from it. There’s also a praying nun. Gary Oldman’s priest joins other priests dirty dancing with prostitutes. Marion Cotillard and her scantily clad colleagues go along with the priests’ requests with looks of complete disinterest. All the while David Bowie sings in a monk’s robe – or some say he’s dressed up as Jesus – from the corner of the room and seems to condemn Oldman’s actions. Cotillard swivels seductively, only to collapse with blood pouring from her stigmata wounds before rising again like a saint.

YouTube temporarily pulled the clip hours after its release yesterday because it violated the site’s Terms of Service (probably due to graphic religious imagery and gore) but re-instated it 2 hours later with an adult-only rating for its graphic content. A spokesperson told Billboard via email that it was taken down by mistake. “With the massive volume of videos on our site, sometimes we make the wrong call. When it’s brought to our attention that a video has been removed mistakenly, we act quickly to reinstate it.”

Marion Cotillard is a fan of David Bowie. She previously performed the David Bowie song ‘Velvet Goldmine’ as a duo with Yodelice on the French TV Show Taratata back in November 2010. On the same show she chose David Bowie for her personal Taratata show – “because he’s a real genius and there’s really no need to say more about him.”

Yodélice’s new music video to the first song Breathe In on the new album is out! Watch the music video on UniversalMusic.fr. It features footage from the studio as well as live concerts – and really captures the atmosphere of seeing the band peform live! I’m not sure whether this is the final version or only a teaser – but for my taste it’s far too short!

Today’s the day Yodélice’s new album Cardioid is released. Order it from Amazon.fr. I’ve picked it up at a music store earlier today and enjoy listening to it – especially the track Five Thousand Nights which is the duo with Simone (aka Marion Cotillard).

For more information on this great band check out their official site. Marion appeared in the music video of the first single off the new album as well as in a promotional picture featured in Elle back in August. During the evening news on M6 on Saturday Yodelice (aka Maxim Nucci) said that Marion inspires him and is simply very talented.

The Eyes Of Mars – Music Video

I added screencaptures and the clip of the full-length music video for the Franz Ferdinand song The Eyes of Mars which was used for the New York Dior campaign. Marion looks great as a rock star!

Apparently, the music video & the song were “only” a back up option since Marion’s busy schedule made it impossible to film a proper short film continuing the story that was introduced by the Olivier Dahan directed ‘Lady Noire Affair‘. The planned ‘Lady Rouge Affaire‘ short film would have been released at the end of 2009. Getting this gorgeous music video at the beginning of March 2010 instead wasn’t a bad alternative at all, I say!

After Kate Hudson also Marion Cotillard got her very own music video for her song in ‘Nine‘. ‘Take It All’ combines previously unseen footage of Marion during the movie’s rehearsal and actual movie scenes with new music-video-style footage of Marion in the recording studio! The clip is amazing – be sure to check it out!

First some additional pictures of Marion Cotillard at the Nine‘ screening in Rome.

Upcoming Events:
Today, Marion Cotillard will (probably) attend the 15th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony as she’s nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Red carpet arrivials will begin at 4PM (PT). The Critics’ Choice Awards ceremony will begin promptly at 6PM (PT) and will be broadcast live on VH1 Television Network at 9PM ET/PT. Details at Locate TV. Then, don’t forget the Golde Globe Awards on Sunday. More on that later.

Upcoming Talk Shows:
The recently announced talk show appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly was quietly cancelled. It seems that it was impossible for Marion to go on the show since she was in Los Angeles at business meetings. Don’t forget to watch the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson this coming Monday evening. And a new talk show appearance to note down in your diaries: Marion Cotillard is scheduled to appear on the Tavis Smiley show, Tuesday, January 19 Thursday, January 21 on PBS. Check your local listings because not all PBS stations carry Tavis’ show and if they do, the times and sometimes dates vary. Many thanks Pushpak for the info.

For both the upcoming event and talk show appearances, I’d appreciate any help with getting good quality screencaptures and video clips for the site. Thank you!

This & that:
Some background information of what went on at last Saturday’s Dior Cocktail party:

“Nine” producer Marc Platt unveiled a video she shot for her “Nine” number “Take It All.” “You may all know Marion is an Oscar-winning actress, but what you may not know is that she’s a talented music video artist,” he deadpanned. The clip showed bits from the film, rehearsal footage and outtakes of Cotillard in the recording studio. “Aaagh, this is so embarrassing,” she laughed as the small crowd, including directors Jim Sheridan, David Lynch and Michael Mann, and Tobey and Jennifer Maguire, broke into applause. Although tout Hollywood seems to want to work with her, Cotillard says she’s next turning her attention to a personal documentary on conserving the forestlands, which she was inspired to do after some friends raised her awareness about deforestation.

Then the upcoming rumoured Marion project ‘Second Coming‘ was recently mentioned by The Arizona Republic in an article about women’s rising power in Hollywood:

But if you do, and your stock is rising, it can happen. Bullock is one example. Marion Cotillard, an Oscar winner currently starring in “Nine,” is another. She’s a producer for the upcoming “The Second Coming.”

“What’s interesting is that time has changed, and now you, as an actor, can find a good story by yourself and make it happen,” Cotillard said, “like Charlize Theron with ‘Monster.’ . . . There are many ways to find roles if it doesn’t come to you from a director or producer. More and more actors are producing their movies. Maybe it’s because of that – they aren’t happy enough with the offers they get, or they want to do something else that directors will not think that they’re able to do.”

Many thanks Aurore for the following heads-up. Hugh Grant visited Le Grand Journal to promote his new movie ‘Did You Hear About the Morgans?‘ in France. During the comedy re-cap of recent news and gossip called Le Petit Journal there was a funny skit featuring Marion Cotillard. Did you think it funny how so many famous Hollywood men posed with Marion for photographs at the recent Dior Cocktail Party in her honour? Well, that’s what they thought as well, and they found a way for everyday citizens (and Hugh Grant) to do the same.

I came across another music video with Marion Cotillard. Back in April 1990 a 14 year old Marion could be seen in the music video Petite Fille by French punk rock/psychobilly band Les Wampas. Back then the music video was quite popular and aired often on French TV chain M6. The video clip is a bonus on the band’s DVD Les Wampas – Never trust a DVD!

I added screencaptures and the hilarious clip to the media parts of the site. While I was at it I also replaced the caps of Marion in Hawksley Workman’s 2004 music video No Reason To Cry Out Your Eyes (On The Highway Tonight) with better ones and added both this clip as well as Givin’ Up (2003) to the video archive.

If you know of any other video clips Marion Cotillard appeared in, please don’t hesitate to inform me about them – it’d be much appreciated!
