Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton are presented with BFI Fellowships as “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and Chile’s “No” are also honored.

Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone won best film at a special standalone ceremony on the penultimate evening of this year’s BFI London Film Festival.

It is the first time a best film award has been decided on by a jury from a field of 12 Competition titles. The films were selected by BFI head of exhibition and festival director Clare Stewart together with the fest’s programming team.

The jury, headed by president David Hare — screenwriter, playwright, film and theatre director — also boasted input from: veteran Hong Kong film producer Nansun Shi; Argentine director Pablo Trapero; Victoria Pearman, producer of Crossfire Hurricane and president of Mick Jagger’s Jagged films; and the British actress Romola Garai.

Hare said: “Jacques Audiard has a unique handwriting, made up of music, montage, writing, photography, sound, visual design and acting. He is one of only a very small handful of filmmakers in the world who has mastered, and can integrate, every element of the process to one purpose: making, in Rust and Bone, a film full of heart, violence and love.”

Audiard’s film stars Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts and details the love between a man and a woman who has suffered a terrible accident. It played in Competition during the Festival de Cannes, but walked away from that event empty-handed.

After Cannes, Telluride, Toronto, Munich International Film Festival (July) and the upcoming London Film FestivalRust and Bone‘ is (or was) also screening at the following Film Festivals:

Speaking of festivals, I added more pics of Marion Cotillard during the press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.

International Feature Agency have what reads like a full transcript of an official Q&A or press conference. Bits of it have already been used in other articles but it’s definitely an interesting read.

And someone uploaded videos of the full Q&A that took place after the second screening of the movie (view the rest below the cut):

Marion Cotillard to Receive Another Hollywood Actress Award

According to The Hollywood Reporter Marion Cotillard will receive the Hollywood Actress Award for her performance in ‘Rust & Bone‘ during the 16th annual Hollywood Film Awards Gala Ceremony on October 22 at the Beverly Hilton. Congratulations! This is the second time that she is named Actress of the Year by these awards. She has previously received it in 2007 for her performance in ‘La Vie en Rose‘.

Hollywood Film Festival founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu is quoted as saying:

“It is a privilege to honor her great talent, as well as her outstanding performance in Rust and Bone.”

This only gives proof that all the Oscarologists predicting an Oscar nomination for her might be on the right track (20 of 21 experts are currently predicting this). The Hollywood Film Awards are the first awards show of the 2012 Oscar season and interestingly, Hollywood Film Awards honorees went on to garner a total of 85 Oscar nominations and 32 Oscars in the past nine years.

After doing some press interviews earlier in the day, Marion Cotillard attended first the ‘Rust and Bone‘ dinner hosted by Moet & Chandon at Michael’s on Simcoe before heading to the actual premiere of the movie held at The Elgin yesterday. More about the dinner over at Toronto Star. And there’s a new poster for the movie – to be used for promotion in the UK.

[edit:] It seems that right now Marion Cotillard is on stage after today’s screening for a Q&A together with Jacques Audiard & Matthias Schoenaerts. And Movieline has posted a spot-on review, they found words to express what I was feeling after seeing it.

Some articles have already surfaced:

‘Rust & Bone’ in Competition at 56th BFI London Film Festival
Posted by Mia on September 5, 2012 No Comments

We’re being hit with loads of news. The 56th BFI London Film Festival (October 10-21) unveiled their line-up earlier today – and guess what, ‘Rust & Bone‘ (De rouille et d’os) is on it. Not only that, it is also competing in the category Official Competition. There are 12 films in each of the 3 competitive categories. There are 2 screenings:

Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 8:30 PM
Sunday, October 14, 2012 12:30 PM

The festival’s comment to the plot synopsis of the “unpitchable” film is:

That such potentially lurid material is explored with subtlety and emotional complexity is tribute not only to Audiard, but to his extraordinary leads. Marion Cotillard is mesmerising in arguably her most challenging role yet, while up-and-comer Schoenaerts impresses mightily as an apparent lunk suddenly forced to look for his hidden resources. Rust and Bone is as punchy and abrasive as its title suggests – but intensely moving and surprisingly poetic too.

Additionally, Variety reports that Marion herself will be participating in a Screen Talk during the festival.

It’s been confirmed. Earlier today, the Telluride Film Festival unveiled (most of) their line-up and The Film Stage has the list as well as the press release. ‘Rust & Bone‘ will screen ahead of its screening in Toronto next week and Marion Cotillard is one of the festival’s honorees for her performance in it. She more than deserves it, congratulations!

The 2012 Silver Medallion Awards, given to recognize an artist’s significant contribution to the world of cinema, go to director and producer ROGER CORMAN who will present CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL (U.S., 2011), THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (U.S.-U.K., 1964) and (THE INTRUDER (U.S., 1961); Academy Award-winning actress MARION COTILLARD (LA VIE EN ROSE) who stars in TFF selection RUST & BONE; and Danish actor MADS MIKKELSEN who stars in two TFF selections: THE HUNT and A ROYAL AFFAIR.

“At the core of each year’s Festival are the Tributes that allow our audiences a chance to gain insight into the creative process of the filmmakers and actors being celebrated,” said Co-Director Tom Luddy. “We are especially pleased with the balance this year, beginning with director/producer, Roger Corman, who has helped launch so many important careers. Then actress Marion Cotillard, whose early career in French films brought her to the attention of the world’s filmmakers and now stars in both European and American movies. Finally there is Mads Mikkelsen, the Danish actor whose powerful performances have brought him much international attention and increasing audience awareness in America.”
