Synopsis
Sam, a filmmaker of today, loves pre-war cinema. He wants to direct his film on Sylvain Marceau, the reckles, womanising young actor of the 40's who dissappeared mysteriously during the German Occupation of France. Miraculously, he tracks down Lisa Maurin, the love of Sylvain's life. She is still alive, waiting for her one and only love to return. Sam is drawn into a voyage of initiation as Lisa tells him of the incredible adventure of her youth and her legendary love for Sylvain, in a film that burns with passion and danger.
Marion Cotillard's role
She plays Jeanne Moreau's younger Lisa, suffering from tuberculosis, who falls in love with actor Sylvain Marceau when she meets him by chance. She plays a free-spirited young woman, determined to make the best of every day despite her fate and it is absolutely tragic when the events unfold. After all, her story takes place during 2nd World War and Sylvain happens to be of Jewish origin. It was only because of the film's limited release that Marion had to wait until 'Les Jolies Choses' to be more recognized for her talent, for she is at her best in this film.

Personal Comments
There are many films about events of World War 2. However, this one offers a somewhat new approach by combining a young man's search for the past with his present life and with the real events. Still, my favourite scenes are the flash-backs, featuring Marion in an absolutely brilliant performance. Overall, not exactly a film to watch over and over again - because of its sombre story - but definitely worth checking out if you get the chance!
