Welcome to Magnifique Marion Cotillard - your English online resource for everything about the Oscar winning French actress. She's best known for her award winning performance in La Vie en Rose - but you might also recognize her from movies such as Love Me If You Dare, Big Fish or A Very Long Engagement. Last year she starred in Public Enemies and Nine as well as opposite Guillaume Canet in Le dernier vol in France. This summer she can be seen in the mind-blowing Inception.

Marion Cotillard in Short Movies

I added more screencaptures of Marion Cotillard in short movies. These are mostly very hard to find so if you come across any more (teasers, excerpts of full versions) please let us know! Here are the links to watch the ones I added screencaptures of today:

- Snuff Movie full version
- Quelques jours de trop excerpts
- Heureuse full version
- Forehead Tittaes full version, incl. full transcript

Regarding the recent spoof advert ‘Forehead Tittaes‘ by Funny or die.com which was released this March: Nadine recently directed my attention to a recent German ‘Inception‘ interview with Welt am Sonntag. To my knowledge this is the first time Marion was asked about it so here’s the translation:

Welt am Sonntag: When typing your name in Google a quite funny short film called “Forehead Tittaes” shows up – the clip deals with how men always stare only at women’s boobs. What made you do this?
Cotillard:
That’s the great thing about the possibilities America can offer an actress. Thanks to “La Môme” I’m now somewhat privileged. In this case it was that I played quite a number of, let’s say, “suffering” roles back-to-back – “La Mome”, “Public Enemies”, “Nine” and “Inception”. But actually, I’m a huge fan of American comedians – Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn or Steve Carell. “Step Brothers” is one of my favourite movies. So I was talking with my agent about what I wanted to do next and said ‘I’m a bit fed up with always playing the sufferer and to always have to put myself in this state of despair’. It even happened that I sat there during shooting and thought ‘Here we go again, same old story, I’ll be completely desperate for the whole day’.

Welt am Sonntag: So you said ‘There’s an end of it, I’ll do something funny now’?
Cotillard:
My publicist suggested meeting the guys of “Funny or die”: I knew them because I love Will Ferrell but I thought: You can hardly just go there and say ‘Bonjour, I’m a French actress and would like to work with you’. But my agent said: Yes, that’s exactly how it works. So two days later I was sitting in a conference room with 20 people writing sketches for me. That was really an absolute dream. Writers I adore telling me totally screwy, absurd stories. Then Will Ferrell came and we shook hands. I immediately hugged him. That’s how “Forehead Tittaes” came to be. It was brilliant. For me comedy is really hard work because it’s something I have little experience in.

Background information about ‘Jeanne au bûcher’

The original source for the recent news about Marion’s upcoming performances in Jeanne au bûcher posted their article online today. There’s not much more information in it, but they list famous actresses who’ve previously played this part since it’s first staging back in May 1939 in Orléans.

However, they forgot to mention some interesting inside information. Back in 1992 Marion’s parents Niseema Theillaud and Jean-Claude Cotillard took on the parts of Jeanne and her brother Dominique when this oratorio was staged in a cathedral in Orléans, while a 17 year old Marion watched in the audience.

When director Jean-Marc Cochereau approached Niseema Theillaud 12 years later for the same part she declined and suggested her daughter Marion. Marion immediately accepted since she’d wanted to work with him for a long time. After accepting the part she had it stipulated in any filming contracts that she’d get a week off for rehearsals and performing in Jeanne au bûcher. She enjoyed working with the orchestra and doing theatre for the first time since her final piece at the Conservatoire d’Orléans in 1994.

Finally, on May 5 and 6, 2005 she played Jeanne opposite Christophe Maltot’s Dominique along with 265 singers and musicians of the Orchestre symphonique d’Orléans. Director Jean-Marc Cochereau remembers that her performance was strikingly sincere, that she played Jeanne d’Arc with what is her talent: the ability to convey immense emotion. The director of the Orchestre symphonique d’Orléans Catherine Mounier recalls that the 3 000 visitors in the sports centre still remember the performance. As do the singers and musicians who took part in those 2 concerts. By accepting the role, Marion Cotillard made them a very beautiful gift, she added.

Marion in the Congo

As posted earlier, Marion Cotillard travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the first week of June and Greenpeace realized a 7-episode documentary of her travels through the rainforests. Travelling by pirogue (a small wooden boat), she witnessed the destruction caused by logging first hand. Many of the episodes are now available with subtitles:

• Original French: Congo: Des forêts en sursis
• English Subtitles: The Congolese Rainforests: living on borrowed time
• German Subtitles: Marion Cotillard mit Greenpeace im Kongo
• Portuguese Subtitles: Congo: floresta ameaçada

More details about ‘Jeanne au bûcher’

PurePeople posted more details about Marion Cotillard’s upcoming special performances in Jeanne au bûcher.

The dates are now November 28 & 29, 2010 and it will be staged in the Salle Pleyel at the famous Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Apparently, the previously mentioned choir of 100 children will be accompanied by the Prague Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Serge Baudo). As we know Marion will play the 19 year old heroine Jeanne d’arc who is remembering important events from her life while awaiting to be burned at the stake. Xavier Gallais will play her brother Dominique.

Jeanne au bûcher is an oratorio – a large musical composition including an orchestra, a choir, and soloists. There is generally little or no interaction between the characters, and no props or elaborate costumes. See pictures of Marion taking part in the same oratorio back in July 2005 in Orléans.

Marion’s journey to Congo

At the beginning of June 2010 Marion Cotillard travelled together with Greenpeace to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Congo: Forests on probation is an impressive 7-part video diary of Marion’s stay there and documents the plundering of the Congolese forests. I am leaving on a short holiday so I don’t have the time to upload pictures but I encourage you to watch these videos.

I will catch up on all the ‘Inception‘ promotion and other Marion news once I’m back next week. And here’s a TV alert: She will be the guest on the Late Late Night Show with Craig Ferguson on the day of ‘Inception‘s LA premiere: July 13.

Vogue Paris Scans

Ahead of some very exciting new pictures one more “catching-up-post”. Around the release of the music video for Lady Dior Marion Cotillard was featured in the April issue of Vogue Paris. The interview is mostly about music and how it has always helped her to get in character while filming. Interestingly, Marion used Debbie Harry of Blondie as inspiration and model to be able to portray a rock singer in the recent music video.

Her favourite music artists are among others MGMT, Yodelice, Izia, Radiohead, Otis Redding, U2, Bowie, Franz Ferdinand, Regina Spektor, Hawksley Workman, Pixies.

Kindly do not redistribute the magazine scans at another Marion Cotillard fan site as they were scanned exclusively for ‘Magnifique Marion Cotillard’. Thank you.

I also added the 2 songs from Marion’s movies Edy (2005) and Une affaire privée (2002) to the Songs Page.

This reminded me of Marion’s iTunes Celebrity Playlist I never updated about. Unfortunately, I can’t post a direct link as I have no access to the US Store of iTunes. But here’s the information:

‘Lady Blue’ Publicity

Added scans of recent magazine features about the new Lady Dior short movie by David Lynch. We learn that it was shot in just 2 days, that David Lynch admires Marion’s talent and professionalism as well as her beauty & style and that Marion thinks David is a genius.

Here’s an English article focusing on David Lynch’s involvement:

She has got that modern quality and old quality that I think the great ones have always.
- David Lynch about Marion Cotillard

David Lynch’s new film for Christian Dior, Financial Times, May 14

Marion also mentions her documentary project about de- and reforestation. She’s still writing it and meeting people to educate herself. Also her recent musical collaboration with Yodelice (I will update on that soon, if I get a moment) is the result of a long standing friendship. Whenever they used to get together they’d make music. Last but not least, she’s enjoying the current absence from the limelight as she’d been garnering a lot of attention lately.

First Glimpse of Lady Blue

As we learned last December the 3rd chapter of the Lady Dior story is set in Shanghai and features a short film directed by none other than David Lynch. Last week more details as well as preview pictures appeared online. The Print Ads – shot by Steven Klein featuring Marion Cotillard as Lady Blue against the skyline of Shanghai and its Oriental Pearl Tower – premiered last week in Air France Madame and should appear in various fashion magazines this month (e.g. May issues of UK Elle and Harper’s Bazaar).

More details about the short film: Teasers will appear online April 20 and the full 12-minute (!) short film will debut on Lady Dior May 15, the same day John Galliano is set to unveil Dior’s cruise collection in Shanghai. What is happening in it?

In the David Lynch film, Marion is reciting a poem that he wrote, and was inspired by the Pearl Tower itself. The words and building fuse in the picture he paints on-screen. Shanghai is such a vibrant and inspiring city.

The Eyes Of Mars – Music Video

I added screencaptures and the clip of the full-length music video for the Franz Ferdinand song The Eyes of Mars which was used for the New York Dior campaign. Marion looks great as a rock star!

Apparently, the music video & the song were “only” a back up option since Marion’s busy schedule made it impossible to film a proper short film continuing the story that was introduced by the Olivier Dahan directed ‘Lady Noire Affair‘. The planned ‘Lady Rouge Affaire‘ short film would have been released at the end of 2009. Getting this gorgeous music video at the beginning of March 2010 instead wasn’t a bad alternative at all, I say!

Marion to appear on stage!

Finally it seems to be happening! Marion Cotillard will, accompanied by a chorus of 100 children, take the lead in Arthur Honegger’s play Jeanne au bûcher when it will be staged at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris for two special performances on November 12 and 13, 2010.

Source: PurePeople.com

Some background information: Marion Cotillard already once took part in this play back in July 2005 in Orléans. Then the January 2009 issue of Studio Ciné Live announced that she’d reprise the role in July 2009 in Paris. However, no further details were ever announced. Our forum member Kit heard back from the theatre last April. It was still under negotiation and details were not settled yet. Unfortunately, Marion’s busy schedule meant that it didn’t happen last year.

Pictures, Event & TV Alerts and more

First some additional pictures of Marion Cotillard at the Nine‘ screening in Rome.

Upcoming Events:
Today, Marion Cotillard will (probably) attend the 15th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony as she’s nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Red carpet arrivials will begin at 4PM (PT). The Critics’ Choice Awards ceremony will begin promptly at 6PM (PT) and will be broadcast live on VH1 Television Network at 9PM ET/PT. Details at Locate TV. Then, don’t forget the Golde Globe Awards on Sunday. More on that later.

Upcoming Talk Shows:
The recently announced talk show appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly was quietly cancelled. It seems that it was impossible for Marion to go on the show since she was in Los Angeles at business meetings. Don’t forget to watch the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson this coming Monday evening. And a new talk show appearance to note down in your diaries: Marion Cotillard is scheduled to appear on the Tavis Smiley show, Tuesday, January 19 Thursday, January 21 on PBS. Check your local listings because not all PBS stations carry Tavis’ show and if they do, the times and sometimes dates vary. Many thanks Pushpak for the info.

For both the upcoming event and talk show appearances, I’d appreciate any help with getting good quality screencaptures and video clips for the site. Thank you!

This & that:
Some background information of what went on at last Saturday’s Dior Cocktail party:

“Nine” producer Marc Platt unveiled a video she shot for her “Nine” number “Take It All.” “You may all know Marion is an Oscar-winning actress, but what you may not know is that she’s a talented music video artist,” he deadpanned. The clip showed bits from the film, rehearsal footage and outtakes of Cotillard in the recording studio. “Aaagh, this is so embarrassing,” she laughed as the small crowd, including directors Jim Sheridan, David Lynch and Michael Mann, and Tobey and Jennifer Maguire, broke into applause. Although tout Hollywood seems to want to work with her, Cotillard says she’s next turning her attention to a personal documentary on conserving the forestlands, which she was inspired to do after some friends raised her awareness about deforestation.
• source: WWD.com via Stéphanie

Then the upcoming rumoured Marion project ‘Second Coming‘ was recently mentioned by The Arizona Republic in an article about women’s rising power in Hollywood:

But if you do, and your stock is rising, it can happen. Bullock is one example. Marion Cotillard, an Oscar winner currently starring in “Nine,” is another. She’s a producer for the upcoming “The Second Coming.”

“What’s interesting is that time has changed, and now you, as an actor, can find a good story by yourself and make it happen,” Cotillard said, “like Charlize Theron with ‘Monster.’ . . . There are many ways to find roles if it doesn’t come to you from a director or producer. More and more actors are producing their movies. Maybe it’s because of that – they aren’t happy enough with the offers they get, or they want to do something else that directors will not think that they’re able to do.”

Many thanks Aurore for the following heads-up. Hugh Grant visited Le Grand Journal to promote his new movie ‘Did You Hear About the Morgans?‘ in France. During the comedy re-cap of recent news and gossip called Le Petit Journal there was a funny skit featuring Marion Cotillard. Did you think it funny how so many famous Hollywood men posed with Marion for photographs at the recent Dior Cocktail Party in her honour? Well, that’s what they thought as well, and they found a way for everyday citizens (and Hugh Grant) to do the same.

New Lady Dior video next week

The new short film for Lady Dior will premiere online next week on January 14:

Meanwhile, Dior ambassador Marion Cotillard, who has been winning plaudits for her singing and acting chops in “Nine,” tests out her pipes for the French house in a music video making its debut on the Internet Jan. 14. Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand wrote the music and lyrics for “Lady Rouge,” the latest installment in an online saga built around the iconic Lady Dior handbag. This musical episode, set in New York City, has Cotillard portraying a working woman who transforms into a torch singer at night, appearing from behind a velvet curtain to belt one out. Cotillard featured earlier on ladydior.com in the short thriller “The Lady Noire Affair,” directed by Olivier Dahan, with a forthcoming installment by filmmaker David Lynch that was shot recently in Shanghai.

I added the new-ish interview with Marion Cotillard about the short film Lady Noire Affair (I had previously never been able to access it on the website) as well as the brand new Making Of of the New York shoot with Annie Leibovitz.

Also, we now know why Marion was absent from the ‘Nine‘ world premiere last week (the premiere was orginally scheduled for another date anyway): She was in Shanghai with director David Lynch to shoot another Lady Dior video. I’m not sure whether said video will really be the second Dior short film as fashion websites reported – or not already the third. In any case the second Lady Dior film – entitled The Lady Rouge Affair should be released this month.
