Marion Cotillard Stars in David Bowie’s music video ‘The Next Day’

Marion Cotillard and her ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘ co-star Gary Oldman star in David Bowie’s new music video ‘The Next Day, the title track of his latest album. The clip was written and conceived by David Bowie himself and directed by Floria Sigismondi.

The video shows Gary Oldman in priest’s garb punching a beggar on his way into a brothel-looking club. Inside, in one corner, a man whips his bloody back. In another scene, a cardinal passes out cash to scantily clad dancers. A woman with a veil drawn over her face has a platter with two eyeballs staring up from it. There’s also a praying nun. Gary Oldman’s priest joins other priests dirty dancing with prostitutes. Marion Cotillard and her scantily clad colleagues go along with the priests’ requests with looks of complete disinterest. All the while David Bowie sings in a monk’s robe – or some say he’s dressed up as Jesus – from the corner of the room and seems to condemn Oldman’s actions. Cotillard swivels seductively, only to collapse with blood pouring from her stigmata wounds before rising again like a saint.

YouTube temporarily pulled the clip hours after its release yesterday because it violated the site’s Terms of Service (probably due to graphic religious imagery and gore) but re-instated it 2 hours later with an adult-only rating for its graphic content. A spokesperson told Billboard via email that it was taken down by mistake. “With the massive volume of videos on our site, sometimes we make the wrong call. When it’s brought to our attention that a video has been removed mistakenly, we act quickly to reinstate it.”

Marion Cotillard is a fan of David Bowie. She previously performed the David Bowie song ‘Velvet Goldmine’ as a duo with Yodelice on the French TV Show Taratata back in November 2010. On the same show she chose David Bowie for her personal Taratata show – “because he’s a real genius and there’s really no need to say more about him.”

Finally! The 7th and last video from the Lady Dior Web Documentary series by Eliott Bliss with music by Yodelice was put online on LadyDior.com earlier tonight! It focuses on the day when Harvard honoured Marion Cotillard as Woman of the Year earlier this year (pictures) – there’s the video of her ‘how to act dying’ – but also quickly shows many outtakes from the previous episodes. I tried to capture them all so you can enjoy these fun photographs! And there are 2 bonus videos as well.

Over the course of the episodes, we’ve followed her all throughout her exciting and sparkling world, from the red carpets of Hollywood to the ateliers of Avenue Montaigne. In this final installment in the saga, Marion Cotillard invites us to Harvard University in the United States where she’s being awarded “Woman of the Year”. A woman in Dior, naturally.

I have no idea why I never updated about this – the screencaptures have been in the gallery for ages – but in January the 6th video of the Lady Dior Webdocumentary was released. It showed Marion Cotillard in Los Angeles promoting ‘Rust and Bone‘ during telephone interviews and at premieres as well as attending the Printemps Haussmann Christmas Illuminations Launch in Paris.

From the red carpets of Hollywood to the unveiling of the window displays at the Printemps store in Paris, follow the hectic and extraordinary life of Marion Cotillard. Ever beautiful, ever passionate, forever Dior.

Florence Cassez’s Exhibition Opening

Today begins Florence Cassez’s 8th year of imprisonement in Mexico. Marion Cotillard is one of her supportes who believe that she’s innocent. Back in April she visited her in her prison in Tepepan and it was reported that she frequently talks to her on the phone. On Thursday, Marion Cotillard together with France’s first lady Valérie Trierweiler and journalist and news anchor Mélissa Theuriau lent their support to Florence Cassez by attending the opening of an exhibition of her paintings – made in prison – together with her parents and her lawyer at the town hall of the 12th district in Paris. Marion Cotillard spoke to Canal+:

I’ve always been convinced that she’s innocent – from the beginning. I couldn’t really explain why. And then I really studied her file and I realized that there was nothing in the file that hold up. We are both the same age, so I think… Well, I don’t know if this is what touched me… I saw pictures of her and something happened, I can’t really explain what but she’s a very dear friend now. I just can’t wait for her to be released.

Lady Dior Web Documentary – Episode 5: 360° Bag

After a long break, the fifth episode of the new Lady Dior Documentary is online! It shows a little bit of what went on behind the scenes when Marion Cotillard was writing and recording the song for the last episode together with Maxim Nucci (Yodelice). Then it shows her going to the Paris Fashion Week and designing her own Dior bag as well as goofing around at the London Fillm Festival.

She’s been the face of the Lady Dior bag since 2008, the embodiment of a dynamic and refined woman. And so it was only natural that Marion Cotillard would design her perfect bag, her very own Lady Dior, as modern as it is timeless, just like her.

Report about Marion Cotillard in Barcelona on ‘Grand Public’

‘Grand Public’ a, I think new, show that brings in-depth reports about all things culture on French TV channel France 2 aired a segment about Marion Cotillard in Barcelona last Thursday night. I added the clip as well as HQ screencaptures on Friday but forgot to post about it.

They showed how big the anticipation was in Barcelona by showing news clippings and posters for the show. However, the people in charge are cited who say that they didn’t want a lot of mediazation or attention so they were happy it only started in the few days before the show. The report included some footage of Marion and the other performers getting ready before the show.

The report later laid out how important this role was to Marion, how close to her heart. After having been handed the show by her mother, so to speak, in 2005 (they included a few seconds of footage with her mother as Joan of arc) she wanted to reprise it again. So when the people in Barcelona were organizing their celebration of the 600th anniversary of Joan of Arc’s birth and wanted to include Honegger’s oratorio but were lacking a main actress then heard that Marion was interested they jumped at the chance. Apparently, there really doesn’t exist any footage of Marion in the play back in 2005 as they only showed stills and had a reporter recall how it was. He said that she was exceptional and that it showed what she could do. If she could do Joan of Arc in this then she could do Edith Piaf. Which she, as we all know, did. Now, a Hollywood star she’s still capable of doing it.

Another reporter said that it’s a challenging part, when you do it right it can be the highlight of your career but when you mess it up it can be the worst experience ever, even put you out of business.

So seeing again the overwhelming approval of the audience by their (10 min) long applause and seeing an emotional and overwhelmed but satisfied Marion backstage after the show, hugging the producer and talking to the press was quite moving to watch.

I have some more articles & TV reports about this but have to get it ready (in English) first.

Rewatch ‘Jeanne au bûcher’ & Screencaps

If you missed yesterday’s webcast on medici.tv of Honegger’s oratorio ‘Joan at the Stake‘ (Jeanne au bûcher) starring Marion Cotillard live from Barcelona you have still 90 days to watch it in delayed streaming on their website or here (see video above). It’s truly an amazing work, brought to life perfectly by the many musicians, choirs and the main reciters, especially Marion Cotillard. As Joan of Arc she was both powerful and vulnerable. From the first moment she makes you feel what she’s going through. And by the end you’re crying with her. It’s only when the applause starts that you can observe her waking from being Joan and becoming Marion again. The applause lasted for 10 minutes and Marion & the other leads came back on stage 3 times.

I added screencaps & a still:
