Marion Named ‘International Actor of the Year’ by Harper’s Bazaar
As mentioned in the last update Harper’s Bazaar held their Women of the Year awards at Claridge’s Hotel in London last night. Marion Cotillard was named ‘International Actor of the Year’ for her critically acclaimed performance in Rust and Bone. Congratulations!
The award was presented to her by Ralph Fiennes who said Marion Cotillard broke his heart in La Vie En Rose (source). ‘British Actor of the Year’ Emily Blunt – who was photographed with Marion – declared stalker tendancies towards her girl crush Marion Cotillard (source).
Marion Cotillard was wearing a Spring 2013 Dior dress with a navy silk panel and a broad black tulle skirt, white Dior heels and a diamond necklace. I simply love her makeup & dreamy, somewhat messy hairdo. It’s flawless! I will add pictures as soon as I have time!
Here are all the winners:
Stella McCartney – British Designer of the Year
Marion Cotillard – International Actor of the Year
The Queen – Icon of the Year
Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton and Ellie Simmonds – British Ambassadors of the Year

Career Tribute at Gotham Independent Film Awards
Congratulations! Variety reports that Marion Cotillard will receive a career tribute during the 22nd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards ceremony held on November 26 at Cipriani Wall Street in downtown Manhattan. Other tributes will go to Matt Damon, director David O Russell and Participant Media’s Jeff Skoll. The ceremony will also award winners in seven competish categories including feature, documentary, breakthrough director and actor, and ensemble.
Joana Vicente, Executive Director of the Independent Film Project, which run the Gotham Awards, is quoted as saying:
It is with pride and great pleasure that we give tribute to these luminaries, each of whom plays an amazing role in expanding the language of film, breaking boundaries along the way. Each has a unique voice and clearly defined vision of cinema for the current generation, bringing perspective and relevance to the film world today (Source).
Marion Cotillard is not only a delight to watch, she is one of the most talented women working in cinema around the world today. Her acting choices are always challenging and rewarding, and her performances show that she is a truly skilled artist, totally dedicated to her craft. We are so honored to present this Tribute to a woman of her magnitude (Source).
New ‘Nightingale’ Pictures
Le Monde featured an article about James Gray’s upcoming movie starring Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix in their magazine M this past weekend. I added digital scans (sorry for the somewhat poor quality). It featured new stills from the movie. It looks so exciting and I can’t wait to see the it. Apparently, the audience at a masterclass during the Zurich Film Festival last month – held by the movie’s producer Greg Shapiro – were also treated to some footage from the movie (Screendaily.com). However, it will probably be released next spring (Bluewin), so we have to be patient.

Marion Cotillard to Receive Another Hollywood Actress Award
According to The Hollywood Reporter Marion Cotillard will receive the Hollywood Actress Award for her performance in ‘Rust & Bone‘ during the 16th annual Hollywood Film Awards Gala Ceremony on October 22 at the Beverly Hilton. Congratulations! This is the second time that she is named Actress of the Year by these awards. She has previously received it in 2007 for her performance in ‘La Vie en Rose‘.
Hollywood Film Festival founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu is quoted as saying:
“It is a privilege to honor her great talent, as well as her outstanding performance in Rust and Bone.”
This only gives proof that all the Oscarologists predicting an Oscar nomination for her might be on the right track (20 of 21 experts are currently predicting this). The Hollywood Film Awards are the first awards show of the 2012 Oscar season and interestingly, Hollywood Film Awards honorees went on to garner a total of 85 Oscar nominations and 32 Oscars in the past nine years.
‘Rust & Bone’ in Competition at 56th BFI London Film Festival
We’re being hit with loads of news. The 56th BFI London Film Festival (October 10-21) unveiled their line-up earlier today – and guess what, ‘Rust & Bone‘ (De rouille et d’os) is on it. Not only that, it is also competing in the category Official Competition. There are 12 films in each of the 3 competitive categories. There are 2 screenings:
Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 8:30 PM
Sunday, October 14, 2012 12:30 PM
The festival’s comment to the plot synopsis of the “unpitchable” film is:
That such potentially lurid material is explored with subtlety and emotional complexity is tribute not only to Audiard, but to his extraordinary leads. Marion Cotillard is mesmerising in arguably her most challenging role yet, while up-and-comer Schoenaerts impresses mightily as an apparent lunk suddenly forced to look for his hidden resources. Rust and Bone is as punchy and abrasive as its title suggests – but intensely moving and surprisingly poetic too.
Additionally, Variety reports that Marion herself will be participating in a Screen Talk during the festival.

James Gray Movie is called ‘Nightingale’
Marion Cotillard’s upcoming movie by James Gray is no longer untitled: According to The Playlist James Gray made a suprise appearance during the Marion Cotillard tribute at Telluride (more on that later) and presented a clip as well as the new title “Nightingale”. Why the confusion?
“It used to be called ‘Lowlife,’” Gray said, “But the author of the novel threatened to sue me. So now we’re calling it ‘Nightingale.’” Gray joked that a few others were vying for the title, but added, “We’ll win in the end…coming sometime in 2017,” he joked.
And here’s a description of the clip that was shown:
In the scene, Marion Cotillard’s prostitute character Sonya is in church praying, and then takes a confessional. “I’m ashamed,” she said through weepy tears and a tattered black shawl, before launching into all her crimes and misdemeanors: lying, theft of food, her rape, and ultimately the revelation that she’s been whoring herself out to help pay and take care of her sick sister.
Having just come off the boat from Poland a few months previously coming to the American promised land, it appears that Sonya’s dream of a better life is actually worse than she can imagine. “We were caged like animals,” Cotilard said about the voyage on a ship to North America. Her rape was public knowledge on the boat and she says she’s damaged goods, hence having to prostitute herself.
Seemingly waiting to exploit her when she got off the boat is her pimp, Joaquin Phoenix, who in this scene, surreptitiously follows her into the church and ease-drops on her confession. Renner’s character didn’t feature in what felt like it was probably a scene from early on in the movie.
Silver Medallion Award for Role in ‘Rust & Bone’
It’s been confirmed. Earlier today, the Telluride Film Festival unveiled (most of) their line-up and The Film Stage has the list as well as the press release. ‘Rust & Bone‘ will screen ahead of its screening in Toronto next week and Marion Cotillard is one of the festival’s honorees for her performance in it. She more than deserves it, congratulations!
The 2012 Silver Medallion Awards, given to recognize an artist’s significant contribution to the world of cinema, go to director and producer ROGER CORMAN who will present CORMAN’S WORLD: EXPLOITS OF A HOLLYWOOD REBEL (U.S., 2011), THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (U.S.-U.K., 1964) and (THE INTRUDER (U.S., 1961); Academy Award-winning actress MARION COTILLARD (LA VIE EN ROSE) who stars in TFF selection RUST & BONE; and Danish actor MADS MIKKELSEN who stars in two TFF selections: THE HUNT and A ROYAL AFFAIR.
“At the core of each year’s Festival are the Tributes that allow our audiences a chance to gain insight into the creative process of the filmmakers and actors being celebrated,” said Co-Director Tom Luddy. “We are especially pleased with the balance this year, beginning with director/producer, Roger Corman, who has helped launch so many important careers. Then actress Marion Cotillard, whose early career in French films brought her to the attention of the world’s filmmakers and now stars in both European and American movies. Finally there is Mads Mikkelsen, the Danish actor whose powerful performances have brought him much international attention and increasing audience awareness in America.”
More from La Rochelle & Telluride Rumour
I recently fixed one of the videos of Marion Cotillard joining Maud Fontenoy & 300 kids on high sea as godmother of the Maud Fontenoy Fondation. Also La Chaîne de Cœur released a more extensive video about the successful collaboration between the Public Aid Association, the municipality of La Rochelle and the Maud Fontenoy Fondation – in fact they will repeat the experience next summer. I added screencaptures from the video as well as more photos from the event.

On another note, there are rumours that ‘Rust & Bone‘ will screen during the notoriously secretive Telluride Film Festival this weekend (August 31 – September 3) ever since Hollywood Elsewhere reported that there will be festival tributes for Mads Mikkelsen and Marion Cotillard. How exciting would that be?!
