Welcome to Magnifique Marion Cotillard - your English online resource for everything about the Oscar winning French actress. She's best known for her award winning performance in La Vie en Rose - but you might also recognize her from movies such as Love Me If You Dare, Big Fish or A Very Long Engagement. Last year she starred in Public Enemies and Nine as well as opposite Guillaume Canet in Le dernier vol in France. This summer she can be seen in the mind-blowing Inception.

Festival dates & TV Alerts

Les petits mouchoirs‘ (Little White Lies) is doing the festival rounds. It’ll be shown at the 6th Festival du Film Français d’Helvetie in Bienne, Switzerland on September 18, 2010, 8pm as well as at the 54th BFI London Film Festival on October 16, 2010, 6pm and on October 18, 2010, 12pm. Thanks Giovanna and Nadine for the heads up!

Guillaume Canet and Marion Cotillard along with fellow ‘Les petits mouchoirs‘ cast members François Cluzet, Gilles Lellouche, Benoît Magimel and Laurent Laffitte will appear on Les Enfants de la télé (TF1) on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 8.45pm when the show comes back after summer break. Other guests on the same evening include Marion’s former costars Julie Depardieu and Thierry Lhermitte as well as Kad Merad and Pierre Palmade. Source: TVMag.com

The line-up for the upcoming episodes of Taratata, which comes back from summer break on September 28, 2010 has been announced: Louis Chedid, M, Phil Collins, Ben l’Oncle Soul, Eliza Doolittle, Guillaume Grand, Maroon 5, Yodelice, Marion Cotillard, Sara Schiralli, K’naan will be taping their performances on Thursday, September 16, 2010. No air date has yet been announced but if the order of the taping sessions is anything to go by we can expect the episode with Marion on October 5, 2010 8.35pm on France 4. Go here to register to attend the taping session. Source: Actu-Loisirs.com

And a little bit of trivia about the programmes. Les Enfants de la télé shows old and rare – maybe awkward – video clips of its guests. Taratata showcases live and pre-recorded footage of current rock acts and features unique duets as well as brief interviews with the artists. The prerecorded sessions air on France 4 every Tuesday at 8.35pm together with bonus material such as footage of rehearsals. Later, it also airs on France 2 (Fridays after midnight) and France 3 as well as throughout Europe on TV5 Monde on Saturday and on TV5 Québec Canada.

There will be an advance screening of ‘Les petits mouchoirs‘ at the Cinema Gaumont Pathé in Orléans on September 15. Guillaume Canet will be there as well as some of the cast. Seeing as this is Marion’s hometown, I’m guessing she’ll be there.

Rumours Round-up

Once again, it’s time for a little round-up of project rumours which are inevitable when it comes to an actor as successful as Marion Cotillard:

• Gravity Sources: BleedingCool (July 24) & Hollywood Reporter (August 10)
Marion Cotillard screen-tested for the lead role of the outer space drama à la ‘Cast Away’ this summer after Angelina Jolie dropped out. However, it looks like either Scarlett Johansson or Blake Lively will get the part.

• Batman 3 Sources: ComicBookMovie.com & Batman Movie News (August 18)
Marion Cotillard was reportedly approached by the studio to play either Selina Kyle (Catwoman) or Talia al Ghul (estranged daughter of villain Ra’s al Ghul). The “inside source” goes on to say that Marion turned them down due to commitments and attachments to other projects. Basically, simple “hearsay” which has since been taken off the internet at its original source about her being approached is currently being spun into a sensational rumour across the cyberspace. Interestingly, Elle.fr writes that Marion turned down the offers due to “projects close to her heart”. I leave it to you whether they have inside information or were simply being original.

• Marsupilami The ambitious project has been discreetly developed by the production company Chez Wam since 2004 and Marion’s name was recently dropped by a Mexican newspaper in connection with it. According to Le Parisien shooting seems to start September 20 and will last until mid-January 2011. Interestingly, La Môme (La Vie en Rose)’s Production Designer Olivier Raoux is involved… Staying tuned!

Marion finished filming ‘Midnight in Paris’

New pictures of Marion Cotillard and Owen Wilson on the set of ‘Midnight in Paris from Wednesday night (August 4) have surfaced. Apparently, that was Marion’s last day of filming, as the last 2 pictures show where she’s holding flowers and wiping away tears.

Additionally, I’ve added more pictures from July 7 & 30. This means we now have 299 photos of Marion on the set of the Woody Allen pic. The filenames indicate which day the photographs are from.

More about the rumour of filming in Veracruz

A movie based on the French story ‘Marsupilami‘ will be acted, directed and produced by Alain Chabat and will be shot in the regions of Catemaco, San Andrés y Santiago Tuxtla, Xalapa, Coatepec, Xico and Jalcomulco. Marion is in talks to do that movie and it would be shot in October, November and the first week of December. The production company is Pixel Films and the movie has a budget of $6 million Euros.

Filming ‘Midnight in Paris’ on Monday

I added a few more pictures of Marion Cotillard on the set of the Woody Allen movie ‘Midnight in Paris‘ – mostly taken last Monday, July 26, but also 3 additional ones from July 5.

Woody Allen’s period movie just went into flashback mode. The director took over famed Paris eaterie Maxim’s on Monday night to shoot scenes for “Midnight in Paris” with Marion Cotillard and Owen Wilson.

Images taken on the set of the movie so far indicate the action is set in the Twenties, but the scenes filmed at Maxim’s, owned by Pierre Cardin, take place in the late 19th century, in what an insider described as a flashback within the film.

Cotillard donned a yellow dress for the ball scene, which featured some 40 extras, including musicians. Filming stretched into the wee hours, with exterior scenes featuring a coach and horses.

‘Inception’ at the Box Office
Posted in: Movies

Following its release on July 16 beginning with Thursday midnight screenings ‘Inception‘ is currently occupying #1 in the US, having grossed $62,785,337 in 3,792 theaters on its opening weekend (average $16,557 per theater). Up until now the movie has grossed $89,470,702 worldwide. This is quite the achievement for an non-sequel auteur action movie with a mysterious plot in the middle of blockbuster summer season! Congratulations!

Box Office Majoy mentions that it was the second highest-grossing debut ever for a sci-fi movie that wasn’t a sequel, remake or adaptation, behind Avatar’s $77 million. Inception’s initial attendance was also higher than similar titles like The Matrix and Minority Report. Also it was apparently the biggest opening of star Leonardo DiCaprio’s career – let alone Marion Cotillard’s even if she’s seen in a supporting role.

Continue to support ‘Inception‘ by seeing it in theaters – according to most critics as well as people who’ve seen it it will definitely be worth your time!

Thank you for not posting spoilers in the comments or in emails to me – ‘Inception‘ is not coming to theatres where I live until July 29.

To begin, some additional HQ pictures of her during the Los Angeles ‘Inception‘ Press Conference in Los Angeles last month. To know what was being said during the Press Conference you can listen to a recording at HollywoodNews.com or read the transcript at Moviesonline.ca.

Due to filming ‘Midnight in Paris‘ Marion didn’t attend the London Press Conference (although she did make it to the world premiere Thursday evening – more on that later). However, she was present during the Press Conference in Paris on Friday ahead of its premiere there on Saturday. You can watch the entire conference with English/French audio on FilmoSphere France’s YouTube Channel. First ‘Inception’ Reviews
Posted in: Movies,

A few hours ago, the press embargo on ‘Inception‘ was lifted and the reviews have been pouring in! And they’re absolutely raving! To get an overview – without getting spoilers – please visit Nolan Fans’ Review Post. Here some Marion quotes I found:

Marion Cotillard, who keeps surprising us with her versatility. She explodes off the screen here – like a vivid flame, flickering in and out.
- Awards Daily

And although she has less screen time than the rest of the cast, Cotillard shines as the film’s cloest thing to a femme fatale. She’s certainly better served here than she was in Public Enemies.
- IGN

The actors certainly give it their all: Cotillard is a presence both sultry and menacing.
- Variety

A terrific Marion Cotillard
- Box Office Magazine

In Inception that loss of control – the scariest thing Nolan can imagine, it seems – is represented in the haunting beauty of Marion Cotillard.
- CHUD

There’s another very good comment about Marion from HitFix.com – but it’s a bit spoiler-ish so I’m putting it below the cut.

Director confirms “Vivre c’est mieux que mourir”

Fabulous news! At the UK premiere of his movie ‘L’Arnacoeur‘ (Heartbreaker) director Pascal Chaumeil confirmed the casting of Romain Duris and Marion Cotillard in his upcoming comedy ‘Vivre c’est mieux que mourir‘.

What are you working on next? Do you have another project after this?
Yes. We have… probably… again, it’s a comedy, a bit different from Heartbreaker. And it’s, it would be with Romain, normally, he read the script, he likes it and normally it’s with Romain Duris and Marion Cotillard. It’s like an action, adventure comedy. A bit more crazy than L’Arnacoeur.

That sounds wonderful! What is the story about? You said it’s got lots of action and comedy.. is it…
Yeah, it’s difficult to tell the story. But in fact, there are two films in the same film. One is the story happening really in the real life where a guy is working in a hotel, he’s a very small guy in a hotel. And he gets into something, he steals some money from a client because he needs to do something. And then he finds the only place where he’s safe in this hotel is in a room where is a very big producer. And the guy, the producer thinks he’s a screenwriter that he’s waiting for. So he will have to invent a new film, and he’s never been a writer. So we are going from the real situation to the film he’s telling, the story. So, that’s something special, but I think it will be very funny.

Inception Still & Production Notes

Ahead of the ‘Inception‘ Premiere in Los Angeles on July 13, the movie will have its world premiere in London on July 8. If you’re in the UK you can win tickets on Facebook. According to Associated Press the press junket will be held this week. Thanks Nadine for all the heads up.

Already now the first production still with Marion Cotillard has popped up online and the official Inception Website has been updated with Wallpapers and Production Notes with interesting details about the international filming and technical aspects of creating a movie about dreams.

“His mind is so rich,” Marion Cotillard says, “and that’s one reason Chris is such an extraordinary director and writer. On a movie as imaginative as this, you need a director you can trust—someone to take your hand and share his vision—and I trusted him 100 percent. He really inspired me and gave me the keys I needed.”

MAL – THE SHADE
Mal, played by Marion Cotillard, is the love of Cobb’s life. “Mal is a tricky one to describe because she is a mix of so many things,” the actress says cryptically. “But maybe it’s the kind of thing you don’t describe because different people can have different interpretations.”

“Mal is the essence of the femme fatale,” states Nolan. “Marion brought an exceptionally haunting quality to her performance. What she was able to do with just her eyes and her emotional openness is quite beautiful. And she and Leo together portray an incredibly moving couple. Underneath all of the action, I think ‘Inception’ is very much founded on a love story, and these two actors found the truth of that in a most remarkable way.”

“Leo is such a gifted actor. I have always been a great fan of his work, so it was amazing to work with him,” Cotillard says. “His commitment is total and his intensity is unlimited. You can see it in his eyes. When you share a scene with him, you can trust everything he does because he’s so authentic.”

DiCaprio has equal praise for his co-star. “It was wonderful to act alongside Marion. She can be strong and vulnerable and hopeful and heartbreaking all in the same moment, which was perfect for all the contradictions of her character.”

Emma Thomas: “I especially loved what Jeffrey did with Mal’s costumes, like the gorgeous, flowing gown we first see her in. She is the femme fatale and her wardrobe reflects that.”

A New French Movie?

During the Cannes Film Festival it was announced that Romain Duris would work again with director Pascal Chaumeil – together they delivered the hit movie ‘L’Arnacoeur‘. The title of the new project is ‘Vivre c’est mieux que mourir‘ – which translates roughly to ‘Better alive than dead’. Interestingly, Wednesday’s issue of French newspaper L’Express listed the project at the end of an article about the balance between commercial and indie productions.

Vivre c’est mieux que mourir, by Pascal Chaumeil. Comedy with Marion Cotillard and Romain Duris, written by six screenwriters, including Laurent Zeitoun.

The movie is an Action Comedy, in which a hotel employee has to act as a scriptwriter to get out of a messy situation in which he put himself. He actually has the habit of stealing from hotel guests. But then one day he’s caught by a Hollywood Producer-Director. Clever as he is he will charm the producer and convince him to develop a movie about espionage. Sounds intriguing and I can’t wait to hear more about the possible involvement of Marion in it. Huge thank you to Nadine for finding this information!

Marion on ‘Le Grand Journal’ today

Earlier today, Marion Cotillard was interviewed on Le Grand Journal. Exactly one year after her interview on the show during last year’s Cannes Festival and also exactly 3 months after her last appearance on the talk show. She looked absolutely adorable in her red dress. And I love her hair.

I don’t have time for a proper translation but here’s a – hopefully accurate – summary. She talked a bit about her character Marie in ‘Les Petits Mouchoirs‘ who’s generally full of rage apparently. She enjoyed filming a contemporary movie wearing jeans and swearing. Guillaume Canet is a great director and she enjoyed working together and had many beautiful moments with the whole cast who mostly are old friends of theirs. She evaded the question if Guillaume was being difficult at home during filming – à la Guido Contini in Nine – but said that the two things can be balanced.

She was equally evasive about her character in ‘Inception‘ but said that it is not “Cat Woman” – the character is very complex and enigmatic. She has many different sides to her. She shares with Christopher Nolan the love of seeing a movie without knowing anything about it in advance.

Coming to Cannes doesn’t feel like an obligation. There are things she’s obliged to do – like talk about ‘Les Petits Mouchoirs‘ – but they’re agreeable to do. And she didn’t sing Karaoke last night at the concert – contrary to what the people on the show thought. But apparently, Guillaume sang – during a time when Marion wasn’t there.

She confirms ‘Midnight in Paris‘ – she doesn’t share a scene with Carla Bruni – and ‘Contagion‘. She also grabs the opportunity to gush about Kate Winslet. However, she was very reluctant about ‘Cosmopolis‘ since she’s still in talks. (This makes sense as Variety reported she was “attached” to the movie – this means she hasn’t signed anything and having her name attached to the project will hopefully help get the project made.) Moreover, she hasn’t heard anything about ‘The Rivals‘ in a long time – its development has definitely been put on ice. Sadly, they didn’t ask her about ‘Second Coming‘.
