Check out the official Lady Dior Website for a preview of the Lady Rouge music video to the song ‘The Eyes Of Mars‘ performed by Marion Cotillard and Franz Ferdinand. The stylish music video was directed by Madonna’s favourite director Jonas Akerlund. Until March 5, 2010 – the day the music video will be online – enjoy some behind the scenes stills.
I also added HQ Print Campaign pictures and the cover of the Song. For the new Dior Autumn/Winter 2009 collection, Marion Cotillard is photographed by the emblematic Annie Leibovitz. An encounter between two women in the world’s most theatrical city, New York. Under the sign of the colour red, the brand’s mythical shade. Driven by passion and mystery, Lady Red reveals her many faces
Scene 1:
The Mirror symbolic
For a woman with a double life,
Daring by day, femme fatale by night.
Scene 2:
The Brooklyn Bridge as backdrop,
Its architecture and complex structur reminiscent of the famous “cannage” motif
Lady Rouge’s silhouette stands out agains the New York skyline.
Scene 3:
A femme fatale,
On the brink of taking her place in the spotlights,
Lady Red relaxes before taking the stage.

As announced Marion Cotillard was the guest during last Wednesday’s evening news on France’s TF1. She talked about the rehearsals for ‘Nine‘, about the great rapport between all the actresses, about not being disappointed that she didn’t get nominated for an Oscar since awards can never replace playing a character, working with people, making good movies, telling stories – all of which are important to her – as well as about still acting in French movies e.g. for ‘Les Petits Mouchoirs‘. There’s also a cute “fangirl moment” at the end when Marion Cotillard is happy to meet meteo-presener Évelyne Dhéliat.

AnOther Magazine have put up exclusive content of their new Summer/Spring 2010 issue featuring Marion Cotillard on the cover up on their website. Very interesting is the behind the scenes video of Marion’s “Fashion Performance” – very much in context with the issue’s title Power of Performance.
Inspired by her powerful and chameleon-like portrayals, we decided to cast Marion Cotillard in our very own Fashion Performance. The current Lady Dior proved to the world she was master of both film and fashion when she elegantly carried off that Jean Paul Gaultier mermaid dress on the night she won Best Actress for her role as Édith Piaf. We looked to the work of the 1960s Fluxus movement to inform this one-off performance, full of intriguing yet unexplained meanings. In AnOther Magazine 18 the narrative continues in an interview, where Cotillard reveals her heroes, her passions, and the contents of her handbag.
And this is what editor in chief Jefferson Hack says about Marion:
Everyone fell in love with her on the shoot. As an actress, Marion Cotillard is the consummate performer. A dream to work with — almost too good to be true.

Marion Cotillard is on the cover of the upcoming issue of Another Magazine, out tomorrow. This is a preview of the (limited) cover as well as the interview:
Inspired by the instruction-based art of the Fluxus movement, AnOther Magazine gave cover star Marion Cotillard three instructions before her interview: bring an object you love; a photograph that makes you smile; and a piece of writing that has taught you something. The first object that tumbled from her bag was a vintage, folding Polaroid SX70, small enough to slide into her jacket pocket, a constant accompaniment across time zones and film sets. Her photographic heroes are Sarah Moon and Peter Beard. As for the photograph, she told us, “I couldn’t choose one. So I brought three. There’s a wood in Corsica where I went on holiday, a beach near Bordeaux I always go to, and a beautiful wood outside Paris, where I often stay with a friend.” The photographs – otherworldly, mysterious, peaceful havens – seemed to be a kind of quiet, talismanic antidote to the lively chaos that has surrounded Cotillard since 2007. The last object Cotillard brought along seemed to bring us full circle to her childhood quest for answers. She picked up a lovingly battered paperback, a collection of speeches, Freedom from the Known, given by the philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti. “It’s hard to choose one book that has changed things in your life,” she smiled. “But the way he talks about fears, happiness, violence, time, life, death, us. How to find your own vision, and understand human beings, is so inspiring. As an actress, I feel like an anthropologist of human emotions. I don’t observe people because I’m an actress and I want to steal things from them. It’s the other way around – I’m an actress because I find human beings so very interesting.”
Marion Cotillard starts her ‘Nine‘ promotion in France already tonight: she’s scheduled to appear during the evening news on TF1 at 8pm. There’s no way I can record this since I’m not home but they put the video up on their website afterwards.
Sadly, Oscarcast executive producers Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic have dropped a bombshell, telling artists nominated for Best Original Song that they won’t be invited to perform the usual big production number (source). Thus our hopes of seeing Marion Cotillard perform the Oscar nominated song ‘Taking it All‘ during the show have been shattered.

Marion Cotillard graces the cover of the new French Elle magazine – on newsstands since yesterday. Until I have time to add the actual scans of the magazines itself enjoy the portrait session of the pictures featured in the magazine and enjoy the article.
Noteworthy facts for non-French speakers: Marion Cotillard likened the 2-month rehearsals for ‘Nine‘ to Star Academy and Fame, she refused to campaign for an Oscar nomination this year and is still thinking about recording an album – with songs written by herself. But she’d need the right people to help her with it.

Great news: Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Marion Cotillard have all signed on to join the starry cast ensemble of Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming sci-fi thriller ‘Contagion‘. The movie is based on a script by “The Bourne Ultimatum” and “The Informant!” writer Scott Z. Burns, and revolves around the threat posed by a deadly disease, with multiple plotlines in the style of Soderbergh’s ‘Traffic‘. Reportedly the story takes place over four continents and is “terrifying.” The plan is to shoot the project later this year, possibly fall.

Earlier today the nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards (Oscars) were announced. Though Marion Cotillard herself was not nominated the song she performs in ‘Nine‘ was among the 5 nominated songs in the category Music (Original Song). Though this is mainly honoring songwriter Maury Yeston I like to think that Marion’s performance helped it to get nominated and just shows that she herself would have been nominated had she been campaigned as Supporting Actress instead of Leading Actress by The Weinstein Company.
Music (Original Song)
• “Almost There” from “The Princess and the Frog” Music and Lyric by Randy Newman
• “Down in New Orleans” from “The Princess and the Frog” Music and Lyric by Randy Newman
• “Loin de Paname” from “Paris 36” Music by Reinhardt Wagner Lyric by Frank Thomas
• “Take It All” from “Nine” Music and Lyric by Maury Yeston
• “The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart)” from “Crazy Heart” Music and Lyric by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett
Here’s Maury’s reaction to his nomination:
“I’m so grateful to Marion Cotillard for doing such a beautiful job with that song. It’s a very special honor to be singled out by the Academy and the world of film and my first foray into that world.”

‘Nine‘ was also nominated in the categories Actress in a Supporting Role (Penélope Cruz), Art Direction and Costume Design. Congratulations! See all Oscar Nominations here.

3 years after getting international recognition when ‘La Vie en Rose‘ celebrated its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, Marion Cotillard could actually come back to Germany. Yesterday, the festival announced their line-up for the “Berlin Special” Gala screenings at the upcoming 60th Berlin International Film Festival. ‘Nine‘ is one of them – and it will actually be the festival’s Birthday Special screening ahead of its theatrical release in Germany. Upon inquiry by Welt Online they could not yet confirm any of the star’s appearances, though. Let’s hope Marion will attend!

Upcoming Events:
Today, Marion Cotillard will (probably) attend the 15th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony as she’s nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Red carpet arrivials will begin at 4PM (PT). The Critics’ Choice Awards ceremony will begin promptly at 6PM (PT) and will be broadcast live on VH1 Television Network at 9PM ET/PT. Details at Locate TV. Then, don’t forget the Golde Globe Awards on Sunday. More on that later.
Upcoming Talk Shows:
The recently announced talk show appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly was quietly cancelled. It seems that it was impossible for Marion to go on the show since she was in Los Angeles at business meetings. Don’t forget to watch the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson this coming Monday evening. And a new talk show appearance to note down in your diaries: Marion Cotillard is scheduled to appear on the Tavis Smiley show, Tuesday, January 19 Thursday, January 21 on PBS. Check your local listings because not all PBS stations carry Tavis’ show and if they do, the times and sometimes dates vary. Many thanks Pushpak for the info.
For both the upcoming event and talk show appearances, I’d appreciate any help with getting good quality screencaptures and video clips for the site. Thank you!
This & that:
Some background information of what went on at last Saturday’s Dior Cocktail party:
“Nine” producer Marc Platt unveiled a video she shot for her “Nine” number “Take It All.” “You may all know Marion is an Oscar-winning actress, but what you may not know is that she’s a talented music video artist,” he deadpanned. The clip showed bits from the film, rehearsal footage and outtakes of Cotillard in the recording studio. “Aaagh, this is so embarrassing,” she laughed as the small crowd, including directors Jim Sheridan, David Lynch and Michael Mann, and Tobey and Jennifer Maguire, broke into applause. Although tout Hollywood seems to want to work with her, Cotillard says she’s next turning her attention to a personal documentary on conserving the forestlands, which she was inspired to do after some friends raised her awareness about deforestation.
• source: WWD.com via Stéphanie
Then the upcoming rumoured Marion project ‘Second Coming‘ was recently mentioned by The Arizona Republic in an article about women’s rising power in Hollywood:
But if you do, and your stock is rising, it can happen. Bullock is one example. Marion Cotillard, an Oscar winner currently starring in “Nine,” is another. She’s a producer for the upcoming “The Second Coming.”
“What’s interesting is that time has changed, and now you, as an actor, can find a good story by yourself and make it happen,” Cotillard said, “like Charlize Theron with ‘Monster.’ . . . There are many ways to find roles if it doesn’t come to you from a director or producer. More and more actors are producing their movies. Maybe it’s because of that – they aren’t happy enough with the offers they get, or they want to do something else that directors will not think that they’re able to do.”
Many thanks Aurore for the following heads-up. Hugh Grant visited Le Grand Journal to promote his new movie ‘Did You Hear About the Morgans?‘ in France. During the comedy re-cap of recent news and gossip called Le Petit Journal there was a funny skit featuring Marion Cotillard. Did you think it funny how so many famous Hollywood men posed with Marion for photographs at the recent Dior Cocktail Party in her honour? Well, that’s what they thought as well, and they found a way for everyday citizens (and Hugh Grant) to do the same.

Each year, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts publishes a Film Awards Longlist ahead of announcing their final nominees. Marion Cotillard with her performance in ‘Nine‘ is one of 15 actresses short-listed for the “Leading Actress” award. Let’s hope that the confusion about her category placement won’t stand against her when the nominees are announced on January 21.
Marion Cotillard – again for her performance in ‘Nine‘ – is up for the Pantene Best International Actress award at the Irish Film and Television Awards. Other nominees are Penélope Cruz for ‘Broken Embraces‘, Anna Kendrick for ‘Up In The Air‘ and Meryl Streep for ‘It’s Complicated‘. I think by now we’ve all seen Rob Marshall singing Marion’s praises at the Palm Springs Film Festival Awards Ceremony so I bring you a quote from Marion about the ‘Nine‘ director:
That human empathy defined Rob Marshall’s relationships with the actresses who star in “Nine.”
“I’ve worked with many directors you could really trust,” Marion Cotillard says. “The thing with Rob is, it’s the first time I worked with a director in an atmosphere of love.” Even on a massive set, she says, when Marshall had to use a microphone system to talk to the cast, “It was always this sweet and nice voice that he had. You know sometimes, when you talk about sweetness, it’s not always positive. But with Rob, he really is the sweetest director I’ve ever worked with. And that’s how he gets what he wants.”

The new short film for Lady Dior will premiere online next week on January 14:
Meanwhile, Dior ambassador Marion Cotillard, who has been winning plaudits for her singing and acting chops in “Nine,” tests out her pipes for the French house in a music video making its debut on the Internet Jan. 14. Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand wrote the music and lyrics for “Lady Rouge,” the latest installment in an online saga built around the iconic Lady Dior handbag. This musical episode, set in New York City, has Cotillard portraying a working woman who transforms into a torch singer at night, appearing from behind a velvet curtain to belt one out. Cotillard featured earlier on ladydior.com in the short thriller “The Lady Noire Affair,” directed by Olivier Dahan, with a forthcoming installment by filmmaker David Lynch that was shot recently in Shanghai.

Remember the ‘Nine‘ Luncheon at New York’s Per Se Restaurant on December 14, 2009 – the day after appearing on the Evening News on French TV and the day before the movie’s New York Premiere? Thanks to Nadine we have footage from it. ET aired a short interview with Marion during the luncheon together with some footage of the ‘Nine‘ New York premiere (more on that event later).
Gallery: 015 Specials > ET (CBS) – 16/12/2009
Video: 001 Specials > ET – 2009/12/16
She also told a journalist about her plans for the holidays during the luncheon:
Marion Cotillard told me she’s spending Christmas in Brittany seeing her 100-year-old grandmother. Then it’s off to Tanzania for a week with her boyfriend before journeying to Los Angeles for awards season.
And the lunch — it didn’t end until 4pm, at which point Marion Cotillard just about fainted from jet lag, Nicole Kidman went off to do interviews and several people went home to nap or change and get ready for Ryan Kavanagh’s cozy dinner at the Pierre Hotel’s new lounge for his Relativity Media.

I certainly hope Marion is currently enjoying her week in Africa and able to relax from all the ‘Nine‘ and ‘Le dernier vol‘ promotion frenzy!

Yesterday, ‘Le dernier vol‘ (‘The Last Flight‘) entered into its 3rd week in French cinemas. So far it hasn’t been doing as well as could be wished for. I went to see it this past Monday evening and absolutely loved it. I uploaded a ton of ‘Le dernier vol‘ related material that’s been floating around since the movie’s release. Many thanks Nadine and everyone who helped me find these.

I added 3 new interviews about ‘Nine‘. They’re lovely reads, especially the last one.
• Cotillard pushed herself into music of ‘Nine’, The Arizona Republic, Dec 24
• Marion Cotillard: The No. 1 of ‘Nine’, The Baltimore Sun, December 29
• Marion Cotillard: A tiger’s fantasy Nine lives, The Toronto Star, December 30
“Someday, I hope I’ll be more confident,” Marion told me. Then she paused, and laughed a little. “Maybe not. I think maybe it’s better to be insecure, actually.”
“When people ask me how I am like Edith Piaf, how I am like Luisa Contini, then I become very mad,” she declared, eyes blazing. “I am an actress and they are characters I am playing. Why is that so hard for some people to understand?”
“Look, if you work all the time, if just do movie after movie, you’re playing another person more than you’re being yourself and the real you can get lost that way. If you don’t live your real life, then you become empty and the only place you can find authentic inspiration is in reality. That’s where the truth is.”
“Rob (Marshall) told me he wanted to make people feel Guido ought to be with Luisa again. That was my job. Where do I find it all? In my character. Never in myself.” Her voice rises again. “I will never, never use something from my own life. I feel it is too dangerous. If you wake up an old pain, for example, because you have to cry in a scene, then how do you put that pain back to sleep again?”

“Each time is unique in its own way. It was my dream as a kid to be in an American musical. It’s an amazing movie and a very special movie, and I hope that people will be made more aware of it by this.”
“The light of my dream is still on and it’s really shining bright today.”
“I feel so good! I’m so, so, so happy! I’m so happy for the movie and I’m so happy for all the people who worked so hard with us because this film really was an ensemble job that we all did. We can’t separate anyone from all these nominations … This nomination is very special. It was my dream when I was a kid to do a musical, so already to be part of this adventure – especially with Rob Marshall who is a genius … This [is] a dream that became true for me and a reality.”

Before looking ahead let’s quickly review where Marion’s been in the last weeks:
November 14-16 she attended public ‘Nine‘ events in New York. Afterwards she did some ‘Nine‘ promotion in Los Angeles before returning to Paris, France. In the first week of December she was in Shanghai with David Lynch to shoot a short movie for Dior (thus missing the London ‘Nine‘ premiere). She returned to Paris, France last week where she started doing ‘Le dernier vol‘ promotion. Most notably on TV last Wednesday and yesterday but of course also behind the scenes. Places she could have gone as well – if she could be in two places at the same time – are the ‘Nine‘ premieres in Dubai and Los Angeles as well as the ‘Public Enemies‘ premiere in Japan. Due to Marion’s and Guillaume’s commitments there will be no ‘Le dernier vol‘ premiere this week in France (source: director Karim Dridi on official Facebook page).
What lies ahead? Marion is travelling to New York now.
December 15, 2009
• ‘Nine‘ premiere in New York, 6pm ET Watch live
• Larry King Live on CNN at 9pm ET (together with Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Daniel Day Lewis, Judi Dench, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Fergie and director Rob Marshall)
• Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on NBC at 12.35/11.35 C
December 16, 2009
• Variety ‘Nine‘ Screening with Q&A, AMC Lincoln Square (NY) at 8.30pm (with director Rob Marshall)
Probably she’ll be heading to Los Angeles for awards season afterwards. Remember, ‘Le dernier vol‘ opens in France on Wednesday (Dec 16) and ‘Nine‘ opens in New York and Los Angeles on Friday (Dec 18).

Marion Cotillard has been nominated a second time already for her performance in ‘Nine‘. This time by the Detroit Film Critics Society and in a different category (this is the only nomination for ‘Nine‘):
6. Best Supporting Actress
Marion Cotillard, Nine
Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
Mélanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds
Mo’Nique, Precious
The 2009 winners will be announced on December 18, 2009. There really is some confusion regarding her placement. As we posted a while back, The Weinstein Company is campaigning her as lead since she has the most screentime of all the ladies and also to give the other actresses a shot at winning supporting awards. However, since ‘Nine‘ is an ensemble Marion’s role is maybe more aptly described as supporting. Let’s see how this’ll turn out. In my opinion, it’s just nice to see that her hard work is being appreciated as it is.

TIME charts the highs and lows of the past year in 50 wide-ranging lists under the title The Top 10 Everything of 2009. Marion Cotillard is featured on the Top 10 Movie Performances List for her performance in ‘Nine‘:
5. Marion Cotillard as Luisa Contini in Nine
The actresses in Nine, Rob Marshall’s musical drama based on Federico Fellini’s 8½, come alive when they sing. Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and (wow) Fergie all lend their solo turns knowing eroticism and high snazz. But Cotillard, as the wife of a desperate filmmaker (Daniel Day-Lewis) is in command of her character whether she’s singing, speaking or just staring darts at her philandering mate. Pain rarely seemed so proud, or hurt so regal, as in Cotillard’s rendition of the ballad “My Husband Makes Movies.” The actress’s showy turn as Edith Piaf in La vie en rose earned her an Oscar. Here, she’s simpler, deeper, better.

I’m not sure whether said video will really be the second Dior short film as fashion websites reported – or not already the third. Last Saturday, Marion Cotillard together with Daniel Day-Lewis, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman and Judi Dench attended the press conference for ‘Nine‘ at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. I’ve added some pictures to the gallery.
Read an interview with composer-lyricist Maury Yeston about his work on ‘Nine‘ on Playbill.com. Some quotes about Marion’s song Take It All (presently available on YouTube):
The wife’s 11 o’clock number, “Be on Your Own,” sung as she hits the exit for good. The closing lines of it — “You’ll take with you all you own / From A to Z / . . . And all of me” — inspired, at Marshall’s suggestion, a new number: “Take It All.”
“‘Be On Your Own’ is a song that made me very proud when I wrote it the first time,” Yeston admitted. “It always had a wonderful and scathing effect on stage, but, as I have said, you need action in a film. Film is far more literal and far more specific than a stage show. No matter how detailed the set of a stage show is, it could never be as detailed as actually being in an actual place in a movie. You see the details of every room, you see the props, you see the lights. You are meant to accept this as literally the real world, whereas in theatre we give you a white tile set or a unit set in the abstract and we ask you to use your imagination. Because film is more literal, you really do have to go farther out on a limb to become theatrical.”
Yet another Oscar winner, Anthony Minghella (“The English Patient”), weighed in on that number. He did the final polish on Michael Tolkin’s screenplay, finishing it just days before his death, and it was his suggestion that the number be shared with Kidman and Cruz. “Three women are leaving Guido at the same time, but only one of them devoted her life to him. Only one of them has been married to him for 20 years. Only one of them is giving up everything in her body and soul. Once we explored it, it did not make any sense for three women to share and participate in the depth of despair and anger that only one of them had really earned. So we restored it to a solo.
“I saw Marion Cotillard’s movie three times, and ‘Take It All’ is as much inspired by Marion Cotillard as ‘Folies Bergeres’ was inspired by Liliane Montevecchi. I think that’s, sometimes, when you do your best work because you realize ‘Nothing that I write makes any sense if I don’t have a brilliant actor to put it across the footlights to the audience.’ Here, I knew I was writing for the specific gifts of a brilliant actress.

To promote ‘Nine‘ The Weinstein Company have made a huge promotion deal with Disney. According to Variety we can expect the following:
• A new 2-minute trailer will debut on ABC on November 22 during the “American Music Awards”. It’ll also be shown on Lifetime, ABC Family, SoapNet, A&E and Bio.
• Tomorrow’s episode of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” will feature a dance number set to the ‘Nine‘ song “Be Italian”. Dancers will also wear outfits from the movie.
• Throughout December ‘Nine‘ will be written into episodes of “All My Children,” “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital.”
• ABC.com will feature a micro-site dedicated to ‘Nine‘, including a sweepstakes, streaming of the movie trailer and – how exciting – a half-hour “Making of ‘Nine‘” special.
• Late night programmes and ABC’s owned stations will also be involved as well as ABC’s Times Square supersign.

Marion Cotillard together with other French actors has participated in a spot asking people to sign the petition L’ultimatum climatique. The petition mainly addresses the French president, that he should take a stand for the environment during the upcoming conference in Copenhagen in December. But it also asks the French citizens to support any measures to save our planet and to show their readiness to do so by signing the petition. More information in the Press Release as well as on the official website Copenhague-2009.
Participants in the spot: Charles Berling, Marion Cotillard, Stéphane Debac, Agathe de La Fontaine, Marc Jolivet, Mélanie Laurent, Bernard Lavilliers, Emmanuel Petit, Lea Seydoux, Daniel Bravo & Guizmo De Tryo, Christophe Willem & Zazie.
People who have already signed the petition include Jane Birkin, Guillaume Canet, François Cluzet, Clotilde Coureau, Vanessa Paradis, Sylvie Testud and many more.

I added the scans from the December issues of both the UK and the Japanese Harper’s Bazaar. Many thanks Lorna and Kelly for scanning the features for us!
I also added a transcript of the UK magazine – it’s mostly to promote Beds are burning, but also Nine. It has information about Marion’s engagement for the environment that previously only French publications have written about. Obviously, I don’t understand the Japanese article but it’s to promote ‘Public Enemies‘.

It seems that the world premiere for ‘Nine‘ in London on November 4 has been cancelled. This is totally understandable as the release date has been pushed back.
For months the media have been speculating whether Marion in her role as Luisa Contini will be campaigned as Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress for the Oscars. While the Academy will be free to place her in any category they like the production of the movie have confirmed that Marion will be campaigned as lead female character for the next award season. All the other ladies will be supporting. Besides being the actress with the most screentime in ‘Nine‘ anyway it was also a wise decision because that way Marion will have a shot in the supporting category for her role in ‘Public Enemies‘. The December issue of UK’s Empire magazine has a ‘Nine‘ feature. As a preview I’ve added the Marion relevant page to the gallery. Scan courtesy of Lorna. Many thanks!

Thanks for the heads up Nadine. The Daily Mail has new pictures from the set of ‘Inception‘, including one with Marion.
But looking at these shots from the set in downtown Los Angeles, it seems a rather complicated romantic interest could also be on the cards.
During the scene, Di Caprio calls frantically to Miss Cottilard as she leans rather coolly out of her own window.
The Titanic star must have a head for heights because he looked completely at ease in between takes.

No, we didn’t get a second trailer, but Vogue has published the behind the scenes video for the November issue. Watch as Marion, Penélope, Nicole & Kate enjoy themselves during the shoot and laughing with photographer Annie Leibovitz despite fresh temperatures. There are also little soundbites from each one about their role in the movie. And there’s a new ‘Nine‘ movie still featuring Marion.
What I like best about the cover – the background of Malibu beach – is really the perfect backdrop for this shoot and the sea together with the rocks and the lovely sunlight is again what makes this video so absolutely charming – apart from the fact that (unlike the cover) it’s full of life & charm from the 4 leading ladies. Let’s hope for outtakes in other magazines soon!

L’association pour la promotion de la presse magazine (APPM) has lanced an award to reward the French’s favourite magazine ad campaign each month. The first award, for the month of September 2009, was handed out to Dior featuring Marion Cotillard based on the campaign getting 62 % of the votes. Words attributed to the ad were sensibility, refinement, charm, chic/style, class, delicacy, elegance, femininity, glamour. Moreover, the ad makes 52% of France’s citizens want to “experience the Dior label”. (Source)

This year’s American Film Market will take place November 4 – 11, 2009 in Santa Monica, California, US. During that time a total of 445 films will be screened, many of which world premieres. Among those is Marion’s much awaited first leading role and her first French film since ‘La Vie en Rose‘ in ‘The Last Flight‘ (‘Le dernier vol’). It will be screened at the AMC Loews Broadway #3 cinema on the following days:
Sunday, November 8th – 11:00 AM
The American Film Market (AFM) is a marketplace where producers and sales companies license films to distributors. The AFM is not a festival. As far as I was able to see from their website the event is not open to the general public. As Marion will likely be stationed in that part of the world at the time to film ‘Inception‘ I’m wondering if she’ll attend?
In any case, the info page for ‘The Last Flight‘ tells us that the movie has a runtime of 98 minutes and provides us (finally) with an official English synopsis:
Marie, an obstinate, adventuresome, young pilot, sets out to track down her lover, who has vanished in the Sahara during a record flight attempt from London to Cape Town. Her unexpected arrival turns life upside down for a remote French Camel Corps troop that is already preoccupied with the stirrings of a Tuareg uprising.
Antoine, a captain in conflict with his superior officers, decides to help Marie with her desperate quest across a grandiose and hostile sea of sand.
In the oppressive heat, their desire to survive slowly binds them in a disturbing and unexpected love story.
Let’s hope all goes well for ‘The Last Flight‘ and some US distributor picks it up so that it will find its way to US theatres soon!

As we previously reported Marion was supposed to provide a design for the benefit of Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque – the organisation helping children from all backgrounds getting much needed heart surgery. However, she was very sad to cancel her involvement as her contract to Dior doesn’t allow her to lend her name to another label (the project also involves fashion house Maje). In her place, Guillaume Canet will sign a piece that will be auctioned off at the end of the planned exhibition.

Listen to a short interview (in French) with Marion from the event on RTL.fr.
I’ve been supporting this woman for 14 years now. I was really touched when I discovered her life and what she had to go through. She’s a wonder to me, her purity, she’s someone who’s not afraid. She’s accepted to not being able to see her husband, her children, for the sake of her people. That’s something extraordinary! Information we have about her, her health condition, her…, are frightening. And if these military people, who are deaf and blind, people who are beyond sense and law… if there’s a moment to help reverse this, I believe in it. I believe that bringing as many people as possible in this country up to date on who this woman is and what is going on in that country is not in vain. It’s a start to get her out of prison.
Translation by myself. Please correct me if there are mistakes!!

Vogue has put the Nine article from the upcoming November issue online. There’s not much about Marion, though:
• Prima Time, Vogue (US), November 2009
Finally, I see Marion Cotillard singing “My Husband Makes Movies” while performing a dazzlingly chic striptease. When I talk to her by phone a few weeks later, Marion, who speaks with a delightful French accent, tells me, “It’s been my dream to do an American musical. When I was a child, Annie was my favorite. I just never thought I would get to do it.” Of playing opposite Daniel Day-Lewis, Cotillard says, “It’s easy to work with such an amazing artist.” Because he was always in character, “it gives an energy to the crew. He creates this desire in everyone to be at their best.”

This information comes from the IMDb messageboards via Nicole’s magic:
The issue is due out on Oct 20. I don’t know if it will actually show up any earlier than that. I think I can safely say that the cover shot features Kidman, Cotillard, Cruz, and Hudson, and I believe is from the earlier Leibovitz beach shoot. It’s a beautiful image.
More from the same IMDb user via Kelly:
There is a lovely black and white spread of all the main women inside the magazine. It is from a different shoot and one I haven’t seen elsewhere. I don’t know if there will be any more, but I did see the cover and that one spread. There, it’s out.
While we’re waiting for the magazine to hit newsstands why don’t you head over to the gallery to look once more at the behind the scenes pictures from said beach shoot.

According to PurePeople Marion Cotillard will attend the following event:
Silent Gathering to support Peace Nobel Prize Aung San Suu Kyi
Tuesday October 6 – From 9 to 11pm on the Square of Paris’ Town HallOn Jane Birkin’s initiative and with most of the artists who signed the petition launched last July for the trial among which Catherine Deneuve, Michel Piccoli, Charlotte Rampling… With the support of Info Birmanie, FIDH, Amnesty International, SOS Aung San Suu Kyi, Ligue des droits de l’homme, Human Rights Watch
Join us to show your support! Come with a candle…
Aung San Suu Kyi’s trial, Nobel Prize Laureat, started on May 18, 2009, at the Insein Prison in Rangoon. She was charged with violating the terms of her house arrest by letting an American citizen stay at her place for two nights. Yet, Aung San Suu Kyi was the unwilling host of an irrational individual convinced that God sent him to her house.
Her house arrest was to officially end on May 27. John Yettaw’s intrusion in Suu Kyi’s residence therefore constituted a dreamed opportunity for the generals to extend her detention. For the junta, all this is about eliminate any opposition before the elections planned for 2010. These elections are supposed to foster the establishment of a ‘prosperous and controlled’ democracy … ruled by the generals.
On August 11, Aung San Suu Kyi was thereby sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour. The sentence was quickly commuted to 18 months under house detention by Burma’s Senior General Than Shwe in an attempt to give an impression of leniency. The generals reached their goal: to prevent Aung San Suu Kyi from influencing the next year elections’ results and from taking part in the political process.
To dodge the international community, the Court of Rangoon accepted the appeal launched by her lawyers at the beginning of September. The courts will hear the appeal on September 18. However there is no hope to see the Nobel Price Laureate released. The Burmese junta did not invest so many political resources condemning Aung San Suu Kyi to finally free her a few weeks later.
Papers from all over the world have already forgotten this summer events. And the generals only hope for one thing: that we no longer talk about Aung San Suu Kyi. This is the reason why it is urgent that we speak up.
Source: JaneBirkin.net
Additional information: “As expected the court rejected her appeal against her 18 month sentence on October 2. A day later, on Saturday she was escorted into surprise talks with Aung Kyi, the ruling military junta’s relations minister. The meeting lasted 45 minutes and was the first since January 2008.”
Marion Cotillard has talked about her strong feelings for Aung San Suu Kyi and her case in a number of interviews.

Empire Magazine, who picked up the news about Inception’s IMAX release, spoke to Marion Cotillard in order to get more information about ‘Inception‘ this week. Of course the film is still as much of a secret as before but at least we know more about Marion’s filming schedule:
“I’ve only had one day [filming] in Paris. I’m doing a movie right now with Guillaume Canet, and when I’ve finished that I’m going to go to LA for the shoot. Can I tell you anything about Lisa? Um… noooo!”
While she’s busy filming ‘Les petits mouchoirs‘ in Cap Ferret both the ‘Beds are burning‘ Launch and the Dior Fashion Show in Paris had to do without her presence.

It has been announced today, that ‘Inception‘ – directed by Chris Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Caine – will be released in IMAX theatres as well as in traditional theatres on July 16, 2010:
“Chris Nolan and IMAX have proven to be ideally suited to each other, and we’re very excited to bring them back together again for Inception,” said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Picture’s president of domestic distribution. “With the rapidly growing IMAX network, our IMAX audience base for this release will be significantly larger than it was for The Dark Knight, which will add to the film’s event status.”

Finally, it is here! The full-length song “Beds are Burning” with accompanying music video was unveiled at 3pm local time in Paris, France. Kofi Annan was joined by Mélanie Laurent, a good friend of Marion. She herself seems to have been absent from the event, so here a quote from Mélanie:
I’m supporting Kofi Annan’s initiative and hope this song will be heard by as many people as possible in the world before Copenhagen. This campaign will help secure a better future for our planet and upcoming generations. The time has come.

Marion Cotillard’s voice can clearly be heard at around 1:31. There’s not much more footage of her in the video than we’ve already seen in the trailer, but the quality of these final captures are much better. Enjoy!

A story of the heart you don’t come across often; One which unites Judith Milgrom, creator of Maje (fashion label) and Professeur Leca’s society Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque.
A heartbeat for a just cause:
Caring for children with born cardiac deformity no matter where they come from and giving them the chance to get surgery no matter the cost.
Artists good-heartedly joining the cause by offering their original works of art.
From October 21 until November 21, 2009 Maje “puts heart” to the matter and organizes an exhibition-sale at the Bon Marché Rive Gauche for all the original works of the invited designers (Marion Cotillard, Vanessa Paradis, Inès de la Fressange, Guillaume Canet, Ariel Wizman, Garance Doré, André, Kuntzel & Deygas, Marco Zanusso Jr, Sam Baron, Tania Bruno-Rosso, Nadège Winter, Mademoiselle Agnès…) as well as an exclusive sale of foulards made from their designs later on.
If your heart tells you to buy one of those foulards, you can find them in store (Maje boutique) as of November 12. All benefits from the sale will fully go to Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque – so that the children can live again, with a full heart.

According to official information sent to Marion Cotillard Web, Marion’s design will be shown during the exhibition (October 21 – November 21) and sold afterwards for the benefit of the society – however she’s in no way affiliated with Maje nor will her design be integrated into the range of foulards.

Thanks to our forum member Nadine I’ve been able to add a new picture of Marion Cotillard on the set of ‘Les petits mouchoirs‘ to the gallery. It’s actually from a French article from SudOuest.com.
The article mostly talks about how Cap Ferret is one of writer/director Guillaume Canet’s most favourite places, he loves the sunsets, the “cabane d’Édouard” in the evening after having eaten seafood – and everything else that makes him respect the region and its people. To help preserve the region, so that it doesn’t become the next St. Tropez, it will not be mentioned by name in the movie even though the majority of it is set there. There’s also talk about the dream cast. And a brief mention of Marion:
On the day of the filming of a “surprise” scene in a pretty villa there’s Marion Cotillard pirouetting in a casual dress, guitar in hand, waiting for the green light from her boyfriend/director.
“I was very lucky because they loved the script,” explains Guillaume Canet. “Most of them knew me. Marion also loved my film and the story. I think they’re all here out of respect for my work.”
It goes on to say that for the filming the actors renounced a certain comfort they’re used to – such as nearby lodgings. The mayor of Lège-Cap-Ferret didn’t want the place to be crowded with trucks from the film crew. Filming is set to continue until October 8.

There were some rumours that ‘Nine‘ would be pushed back. However, The Weinstein Company has officially issued the following statement to HitFix.com:
“The rumors are untrue. ‘Nine‘ is opening limted on November 25 and will continue to expand through Christmas.”

It would appear that Marion Cotillard really has been cast in the big Portuguese production ‘Mistérios de Lisboa‘ – according to yesterday’s news item on Ante-Cinema.com. Thanks Nadine for the information and Mariana for the translation:
Marion Cotillard (Public Enemies), Louis Garrel (The Dreamers), Léa Seydoux (Inglourious Basterds) and Melvil Poupad (Speed Racer) are part of the impressive international cast of Mysteries of Lisbon, one of the biggest Portuguese productions ever, which also includes Portuguese actors Adriano Luz, Maria João Bastos, São José Correia, José Afonso Pimentel, Ana Padrão, Catarina Wallenstein, Ivo Canelas, Margarida Vila Nova, Carloto Cotta, among many others.
Chilean director Raoul Ruiz is in Portugal to prepare this ambitious project, that will recreate the city of Lisbon of the end of the 18th century, beginning of the 19th century, and that will culminate in a long-feature film and a TV series. Produced by Paulo Branco — in a Clap Filmes/Alfama Filmes co-production –, Mysteries of Lisbon will be shot mainly in Lisbon, but also in France and in Brazil. The film will already have two days of shooting during the month of September.
Interestingly, Léa Seydoux was handed her Chopard Trophy by Marion Cotillard at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Note that in this bit of information Laetitia Casta is no longer listed.
Edit: According to the producer’s website Marion Cotillard’s involvement is not definite yet as they posted yesterday:
Melvil Poupad, Léa Seydoux, Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet, Martin Loizillon, Louis Garrel and, possibly, Marion Cotillard are part of the impressive international cast of Mysteries of Lisbon, one of the biggest Portuguese productions ever.

Thanks to our forum member Nadine for the information. Apparently, the release date for ‘Le dernier vol‘ (The Last Flight) in France and French-speaking Switzerland has been pushed back to December 16, 2009. It now no longer faces direct competition from ‘Twilight: New Moon‘ – however ‘Avatar‘ opens in the same week.
There’s also a new synopsis, at least it’s a re-written version of the one we’ve posted back in March (translation by myself):
French Sahara, 1933
Having embarked on a search for the man she loves, who disappeared while attempting to fly from London to Cape (South Africa) by plane, the adventurer and aviator Marie Vallières de Beaumont is constrained to land her biplane close to an outpost of the French “Meharists” (French Foreign Legion) in the middle of the Sahara desert.Faced with the young woman’s determination Antoine Chauvet, a lieutenant in conflict with his hierarchy, decides to help her in this hopeless quest – in a place called Ténéré (south central Sahara) which is both grandiose and hostile.
In this desert, which doesn’t lie, and in the abandonment the place imposes, Marie and Antoine are going to discover a truth they hadn’t expected.
Also there’s a tentative theatrical release date for ‘Les petits mouchoirs‘ (France): October 20, 2010.

After a very short visit to the ‘Inception‘ movie set while it was in Paris earlier this month – the film crew has since moved on to Morocco – Marion Cotillard is back working on the set of Guillaume Canet’s third movie ‘Les petits mouchoirs‘ which started filming at the beginning of August and which is set to continue shooting for 8 more weeks. Last week the paparazzi got some (adorable) pictures from the set. The first batch is from August 26 in Claouey and the second from August 27 in Cap Ferret. Marion’s mostly pictured with Gilles Lellouche and Benoît Magimel. Enjoy!

The release date for Rob Marshall’s star studded musical ‘Nine‘ is fast approaching – November 25 – and finally we get to see some more Marion stills. Though middle to low quality they’re definitely exciting, so enjoy!
TheProjectNine has kindly scanned the ‘Nine‘ feature in this week’s Entertainment Weekly. There is a lovely picture (with Marion) from group rehearsals.
Also some background information from Variety:
“Take It All,” originally written as a trio for Kidman, Cruz and Cotillard but, just before shooting, rearranged as a solo for Cotillard, according to music supervisor Matt Sullivan. “Heart-wrenching” is how Yeston describes the performance by Cotillard (who won an Oscar playing Edith Piaf).
Music director Paul Bogaev’s biggest job was working with the actors and preparing them to record the songs before shooting. Cotillard auditioned for the producer but was cast as the wife.

Marion Cotillard narrated the forthcoming ‘Voyage sous les mers 3d‘ by the brothers Jean-Jacques & François Mantello. The film opens in French theatres next week, August 26. According to the movie’s official site as of today there will be 4 advanced screenings with the presence of the directors. Not sure, if that’ll include Marion on at least one of the screenings? Maybe she’s too busy shooting ‘Inception‘ (although I think they were only shooting in Paris for 3 days) or she went back to the set of ‘Les Petits Mouchoirs‘ again already.
Anyway, I added the French interview with Marion from the production notes, the video interview from MenStyle.fr, the trailer, the poster as well as a picture of Marion behind the microphone to the media sections.
Maybe someone could provide English translations soon? That’d be awesome. In the meantime a short summary. We learn that Marion was intrigued by the project as soon as she heard about it. She was approached while filming ‘Le dernier vol‘ in the Sahara. She’s done some diving herself and was amazed by the wonders of the ocean. According to her watching ‘Voyage sous les mers 3d‘ will feel like a real dive.

Wow! Yesterday, August 17, Marion Cotillard along with Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page were busy shooting scenes for ‘Inception‘ in Paris, France. According to ComingSoon.net this took place around the Pont de Bir-Hakeim, a bridge that crosses the Seine River. They also put up a ton of pictures and it seems that Marion did 2 different scenes. One getting involved in a fight with Leonardo & Ellen’s characters and one kissing Leonardo. Marion Cotillard plays Lisa Hastley, the wife of Leonardo’s character.

This is a project that apart from the IMDb has also been widely reported in the Portuguese media. ‘Mistérios de Lisboa‘, the novel by famous author Camilo Castelo Branco, is being made into a film and a television mini-series by Chile’s leading director Raoul Ruiz. Marion Cotillard is reportedly in negotiations to be part of the project while Laetitia Casta, Melvil Poupaud, Adriano Luz and José Afonso Pimentel among many others have already been confirmed.
One of the biggest names in worldwide cinema, Raoul Ruiz, returns to Portugal to film Mysteries of Lisbon. Ruiz’s ninth project shot in our country (Portugal), is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by one of the greatest authors of Portuguese literature: Camilo Castelo Branco. This ambitious project, shot mainly in Lisbon during the fall of 2009, anticipates a recreation of the city at the end of the 18th century, and beginning of the 19th century, an adaptation by Carlos Saboga that will result in a film and a television series.
(thanks Mariana for the translation)
Filming is also supposed to take place in France and Brazil. The book is one of Camilo Castelo Branco’s early novels and was origininally written for a local paper in the style of a novella, with each chapter enticing the reader to continue unravelling the mysteries. It has been described as a “romance of the imagination” in the style of Victor Hugo.
Synopsis (of the novel):
This narrative account of two stories that mingle and fuse, because the story of Peter can only be counted if not to forget Father Dinis. Peter is an orphan of father and mother and be educated by a priest. The biggest regret of Peter is the condition of orphans and that is so poor. But Peter is not an orphan, much less poor, is the fruit of a forbidden love and reason of a great tragedy. You son of a major Portuguese families. It spent a lot of money for he died at birth, but spent even more so that he lived. Lived, knew the truth, that has even more sad. He was orphaned, and no longer saw the death of the mother and those who most loved.
Who was the father Dinis? Someone who brought it with hope, traveled the world to life, peace and death. Father Dinis was poet, was beggar, and condemn missionary, gave his life forever and always bring death. This timeless novel is a tragedy that crosses generations, which reveals deep secrets such as the decline of humanity. Illegitimate children have to die, duels of honor, sick persecution, fortune

Probability: This is a project which seems to really be happening in the near future. Everything’s set for a November start of filming. In the first update (July 30) about the project on the production company’s website they said they were still in negotiations with Marion Cotillard, however in another, more recent update (August 5), her name’s simply listed among the rest of the cast. Let’s hope that this means those negotiations went well and that her filming schedule for ‘Mistérios de Lisboa‘ was arranged in a way as not to interfere with the shooting of ‘Inception‘. Marion has always said she’d love to work anywhere in the world, so to have a part in a Portuguese production would clearly be thrilling for her.

Another film rumour originating from the IMDb. It’s a movie called ‘Second Coming‘, wich would be writer/director Nenad Cicin-Sain’s movie debut. Marion Cotillard would star as Galia and Mark Ruffalo as John Zener. Marion Cotillard is also listed as Executive Producer for this film.
Synopsis:
Actor John Zener becomes an even bigger media obsession after releasing a controversial film on the Second Coming of Christ. This obsession results in the death of his wife and daughter in a paparazzi-caused accident forcing John to question for the first time the choices he has made. Teetering between delusion and sanity, John embarks on a journey through NYC, France and Spain to free himself of everything that symbolized his former life. It is through his journey that John finds transcendence and embraces the empathy that was missing in his life.
Probability: Again, I’ve found no outside sources to confirm this but the fact that Marion’s also listed as executive producer gives it more credibility.

According to the IMDb Marion Cotillard and Javier Bardem are attached to star a new project called ‘Picasso‘ about the extraordinary life story of legendary artist, Pablo Picasso, written & directed by Bandar Albuliwi.
Probability: No other sources confirm this. The movie’s production company Bandar Productions lists the movie as being In Development on their website. Which means that nothing about the project has been finalized yet, incl. casting.

Farms are failing, cities baking
Steam in 45 degrees
The time has come
To take a stand
It’s for the earth
It’s for our land
The time has come
A fact’s a fact
The heat is on
No turning back
How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?
Heaven hopes we’ll find a cure
From Bejing west to Timbuktu
The global village lives and breathes

The Sahara article is actually about Figaro Magazine’s visit to the Le dernier vol set. We learn that the full name of Marion’s character is Marie Vallières de Beaumont.
Marion had an immediate visceral connection with Marie Vallières de Beaumont, this passionate woman who fights to rescue the man she loves to the point of exhaustion and who in the abandonment of the desert discovers a new meaning of life.
Marion Cotillard shares this perfectionism, she’s always extremely focused even for a short scene. The young Oscar winner has lost none of her naturality and simplicity though. Once we see her knitting a scarf for her niece. We’re amused to see her candidly confide her “unhealthy sentimentality” towards animals, including insects. Then the Marion we know is back, one evening she’s singing and dancing, together with a nomadic Berber family who arrived to work as extras on the film. “Like my character, I’ve found a lot more in the desert than I set out for: especially these smiles of the children!”

The pictures for the Print Ads are shot by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. Remember, for Paris it was Peter Lindbergh. Ultimately the print campaign will again be followed by a short video starring Marion Cotillard, this time entitled The Lady Red Affair.
