I can’t believe it’s already 2009! I hope you have all had a fabulous time with your loved ones during the holiday season and have started well into the new year!
Looking back, I think it’s safe to say 2008 has been THE year for our favourite actress Marion Cotillard! Winning Best Actress awards at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, the Césars and even at the Oscars for her performance in La Vie en Rose cemented her status as an exraordinary talented actress across the globe. There were also awards handed out to her at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, Palm Springs Film Festival as well as London Critics Circle Award. Immediately after writing history when she received the first ever Best Actress Oscar trophy for a performance entirely in the French language Marion Cotillard immersed herself in work. She was busy perfecting her American accent to play Johnny Depp’s John Dillinger’s girlfriend Billie in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. After a much deserved break during summer it wasn’t long before she joined Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Fergie and Daniel Day-Lewis in a dance/drama boot camp for Rob Marshall’s upcoming musical Nine. She spent the final months of the year on set of the musical. Amidst all of that she somehow found time to record a song (The Strong Ones for LOVE Cartier) and pose for the new Lady Dior campaign in front of Peter Lindbergh’s camera.
Marion Cotillard: Best of 2007
Compiled by the Magnifique Marion Cotillard staff. Please feel free to post your own choices here or at the forum.
Best News: No doubts here! Marion winning a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a César as well as an Oscar was definitely the best news ever!
Worst News: The way the media as well as people online created a polemic scandal taking some old 9/11 related quotes by Marion Cotillard out of context. I could never have imagined such dashing possible.
Favourite magazine cover:
It’s just perfect! I couldn’t take my eyes off the magazine when I first saw it.
Favourite magazine picture:
I loved all of the promotional pictures for Chopard that appeared in a number of magazines. These are just 2 of them. (Layout picture is another one)
Favourite photo shoot:
I loved the shoot for Elle magazine. She looked fabulous in each of the pictures. I think she looks somewhat different – almost unrecognizable – in some of the pictures. I loved that it portrays her laid-back sexyness as well as her funny side.
Favourite photo shoot picture (excluding the shoot mentioned above):
It’s always so difficult to pick one single picture. But I went with this picture from the Oscar Nomination shoot. A happy and smiling Marion, not to mention I just love the dress on her.
Favourite event look – Awards:
Marion looked stunning at every awards ceremony in 2008 but I went with the most famous one. I think everything about her outfit at the Academy Awards was perfect: dress, hair, make-up, jewellery.
Favourite event look – Other:
I loved the look at the Chopard evening in celebration of Marion Cotillard.
Love the full curly hair!
Favourite 2008 project:
There was no new movie. So I’m going with the Lady Dior campaign – Marion is definitely striking a perfect pose in the adverts. Can’t wait to see her acting out the story in 3 additional cities.
Favourite still from a 2008 project:
I’m not demeaning myself, I know my place. I’m not a hero. Heros are the women who fight for freedom, for human rights. They’re the Aung San Suu Kyi, the Chirin Ebadi, the Wangari Maathai, who work for a better world. Besides, they’re very humble people. In my case, it’s just because of my work as an actress that I was awarded. Why showing off? It’s nice to be recognized by your peers, but I haven’t alienated myself from reality though. I remain someone very ordinary who wants to stay close to ordinary people.
I have some wrinkles here because I was smiling so much. The opportunity to share that movie like this — it has been amazing.
I don’t have much confidence in myself but I know one thing which helps me: I can work hard.
I was shocked. I was shocked. I was totally shocked. – about hearing the Oscar nomination
Oh — thank you so much. Olivier, what you did to me, Maestro Olivier Dahan, you rocked my life. You truly rocked my life. Thank you so much to Picturehouse for your passion, members of the Academy, thank you so, so much. And — wow. Well, I’m speechless now. I — I — well, I — thank you life, thank you love, and it is true, there is some angels in this city. Thank you so, so much.
Favourite quote by someone else:
She’s my most beautiful encounter cinema-wise. We resemble each other, we both hate female relations, jealousy between girls… She’s absolutely in accord with what she declares in the media. When she says that she’s bio and an ecologist, I confirm it to you. – Mélanie Laurent
Marion surprised me: she could have played in silent films. She has the simplicity and the openness that I expect from an actress. – Tim Burton
Marion Cotillard in “La Vie en rose” was absolutely astonishing, and the synthesis of the performance with the whole film is superb. As much as inhabiting Piaf, she was also creating a creature, and I thought that was astonishing and inspiring. One of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen. – Cate Blanchett
Not only did she craft a flawless impersonation of a famous personality, but Marion’s humanity elevated her performance to a devastatingly honest and yet seemingly effortless personification of integrity and grace. To me, this is more than just a great performance; it’s a document of this actress’s overwhelming ability to love. – Ryan Gosling
Most anticipated Marion release for 2009:
I’m just excited we will finally see Marion Cotillard in a new film – after such a long wait there will even be 2 new movies 2009. Personally I think I’m more looking forward to Nine rather than Public Enemies.
A big thank you to Marion Cotillard for being such an inspiration, seeing how she handled the whole awards circuit and being catapulted to fame proves to me she’s more than just a sensationally talented actress but also a good person.
Thank you loyal visitors of the site for your trust and feedback. I’ve encountered technical problems a number of times in 2008 and sadly still haven’t found the time to complete the gallery but rest assured this is my goal for 2009.
