Another new project

Posted in: Movies, News & Rumours,

Those of you who have read the French interview on the Studio Hors Série scans already know. Marion Cotillard has another upcoming project apart from Nine. It’s Karim Dridi’s next film. Actually, I just learned, she referred to this project already back in September in a French interview with Télécinéobs: “Ce sera une très belle histoire d’amour.” Which translates to “It will be a very beautiful love story.” You will be pleased to know that the November-January issue of US magazine MEAN has more information (scans coming soon!):

I have an amazing beautiful project in France at the end of 2008. It’s a true story, it takes place in the desert and it’s in the early ’30s. She’s a woman, she flies planes and she goes to Africa by herself because the love of her llife has crashed in the desert. There is a French director from Tunisia attached to the project, Karim Dridi.

This sounds exciting, doesn’t it?! If you know anything else about this project – e.g. the movie title – please don’t hesitate to tell us!

Let’s all hope that scheduling conflicts for Marion Cotillard can be avoided! Karim Dridi’s film is scheduled to start shooting at the end of 2008 and Nine‘s planned production start is in the second half of 2008.

The African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) has surprisingly named Marion Cotillard Best Actress for her performance in La Vie en Rose. But Marion isn’t African-American!? You may wonder. AAFCA President Gil Robertson, IV explains:

“Although our organization gives specific consideration to work by artists of African descent, Ms. Cotillard’s astonishing portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose is a standout performance worthy of recognition.”

Then, more nominations. The London Critics Circle nominated Marion Cotillard along with Laura Linney “The Savages”, Maggie Gyllenhaal “Sherry Baby”, Angelina Jolie “A Mighty Heart” and Anamaria Marinca “4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days” for Actress of the Year. Marion’s strong competitor Julie Christie (and sometime competitor Keira Knightley) are nominated in a different category this time: British Actress of the Year.

Although the Dallas Fort-Worth Critics named Julie Christie Best Actress, Marion Cotillard came next in voting, before Ellen Page, Laura Linney and Angelina Jolie.

Then the St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association nominated Marion Cotillard for Best Actress. Along with Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Julie Christie (Away From Her), Jodie Foster (The Brave One), Laura Linney (The Savages) and Ellen Page (Juno). Award winners are to be announced at a Press Conference on Friday, December 21. Official Site

Finally (at least for today), the Detroit Film Critics Society nominated our Marion as well. This time her fellow nominees are: Ellen Page (Juno), Julie Christie (Away From Her), Laura Linney (The Savages), Amy Adams (Enchanted). The official winners will be announced next Monday. (source)

Are you somewhat losing sight of what awards Marion Cotillard is collecting and being nominated for? You’re not the only one then. I’ve updated the Awards & Nomination page to help you out there.

Globe nominee Cotillard has rosy future

from LA Daily News / by Greg Hernandez

t’s always nice to talk with someone when they are having a good day.

Thursday was a very good day for Marion Cotillard, who called from Paris in good spirits because she had just been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her acclaimed performance in “La Vie En Rose.”

“It means that people appreciate your work, so it is something,” she said. “You can say that it’s very subjective or about an awards campaign. Me? I just enjoy the whole thing. Deeply, deeply, I don’t care about awards. But I’m starting to have sparkles in my heart. So I asked myself, Well, you do like that. Be honest.”

In “Rose,” the 32-year-old actress portrays French singer Edith Piaf from her late teenage years into her late 40s. The movie’s title is French for “Life in Pink,” which was the signature song of Piaf.

“I didn’t think about (awards) while we were shooting,” Marion said. “We didn’t have any idea of what it could be because it was very, very risky, to ask only one actress to do the whole thing from 19 years old to 47. Usually you ask two actresses. When I read this part with such a powerful character, I thought, This is bigger than my dream to play a whole life – an extremely intense, passionate life.”

While she is enjoying the acclaim for “Rose,” Marion is eager for the writers strike to end so she can work on director Rob Marshall’s film version of the Broadway musical “Nine.” After that, she has a French film which she describes as “an amazing love story in the African desert in the ’30s.”

But before work, there will be glamour.

Marion was named Best Actress recently at the Los Angeles Film Festival and returns to Southern California in just a few weeks to be honored by the Palm Springs Film Festival.

Then a few weeks later comes the Golden Globes.

“Of course I will be there,” she said. “I’m really looking forward to coming because this is a very unique thing for a French girl. To have the opportunity to meet people I admire so much. I am just enjoying the present time. No pressure at all.”

Marion’s Reaction

I’ve added 2 articles to the Press section about Marion Cotillard’s reaction to the Golden Globe nomination.

Not finding out about the nomination until two hours after the announcement she was then celebrating the happy news by drinking champagne (Edith Piaf’s favorite champagne, Bollinger) in the old section of Paris.

She definitely plans on attending but doesn’t yet know what she’ll be wearing – though Jean-Paul Gaultier and Chanel are at the top of her list.

Marion Cotillard’s Golden Moment, E! Online

“I am really enjoying every minute and second of it!”

So, what does she think Piaf would make of all this? “She would laugh,” Cotillard says. “She was laughing all the time.”

from The Hollywood Reporter

“I’m in the old section of Paris drinking Edith Piaf’s favorite champagne, Bollinger, which has become mine,” said exuberant “La Vie en Rose” star Marion Cotillard of her best musical actress nomination. “The first big reaction was when it did well in France, and then the film got recognition all around the world. It’s just been a series of surprises, and I hope it never ends.” Picturehouse president Bob Berney wasn’t surprised by Cotillard’s success. “For me, it was expected. I think when people in Los Angeles met her in person, it was shocking to them how different she was from the character.”

Golden Globes Nominations!

The Golden Globe nominations were announced just today and our Marion has indeed been nominated. Marion, along with Amy Adams, Ellen Page, Helena Bonham Carter, and Nikki Blonksky received a nomination for the category “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Muscial”. I’m almost positive that Marion will walk away with this award, as no other actress delivered the same powerful, emotional and all around amazing performance as Marion. No word yet on when the Golden Globes will air, or whether or not Marion will be attending.

Edit: Thanks to Elizabeth for this bit of information. The 65th Annual Golden Globes will air January 13th, 2008 on NBC at 8pm.

Variety (and others) are just reporting about a new award the Santa Barbara Film Festival will be giving out:

The Santa Barbara Film Festival will honor Casey Affleck (“Gone Baby Gone,” “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”), Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en rose”), James McAvoy (“Atonement”), Ellen Page (“Juno”) and Amy Ryan (“Gone Baby Gone”) with its inaugural Virtuosos Award.

Nod was established this year to recognize the performances of a select group of young actors. They will be honored during a tribute ceremony Jan. 30 at Santa Barbara’s Lobero Theater.”

There will always be one or two performances that stand out, but this year in particular there were several performances by actors that truly set them apart from the pack,” said fest exec Roger Durling.

The Santa Barbara Film Festival runs Jan. 24-Feb. 3.

The award was created to recognize a group of young actors who have distinguished themselves through performances in film this past year. Congratulations Marion Cotillard!
